Has anybody replaced their Mossberg 590 plastic safety button with the Vang Comp Systems Oversized Safety? Does one use the same "631-000-014" safety button screw that comes with the SG or does Vang Comp send a replacement screw? Also, what the heck kind of screw driver do you use on this (twisty, curvy) kind of head? Finally, is the oversized safety worth it...or should I consider the stock metal Mossberg button for the 590A1? thank-ye in advance...dawgfvr

I haven't changed my 500A over to a metal button yet, but it's on the agenda. Brownells has both the Mossberg metal replacement and the one from Vang Comp Systems. The latter page does say the VC part is "taller," but neither one mentions if a screw is included. I'd like to think they'd include one, unless you're able to just use the existing screw. :scrutiny:
Also note that the description for the Mossberg part says "May require minor fitting" but needs "no modification to the receiver or the detent settings."

Also, what the heck kind of screw driver do you use on this (twisty, curvy) kind of head?
I'm too lazy to go dig mine out and see if that screw has an oddball kind of drive, so is it one of these, maybe 'g' or 'h'? screw-head-drives.jpg
I know you can't get the screw out to take it to the hardware store and look for a matching driver, and you probably don't want to go into the store carrying the 590, so . . .

And although the Vang Comp is close to twice the price of the Mossberg part at Brownells, I'm giving some serious thought to the larger one.

I THINK ( my 590 is 110 miles away) the mossberg has a screw like the ones holding a bathroom stall together

liiks like a flat head, with the counter clockwise contact side at a slant so a normal flat head will "climb out"

Well...if I am going to take the time to change the safety out...I may as well go with the larger Vang Comp. I may as well purchase another screw too...its cheap enough (wish I could say the same about the VC safety). I would imagine that any screwdriver will do the job if I just use a bit of "elbow grease"...looks like the strangest screw head I have ever seen. I will give feedback when the operation is done.

When I saw Hoppy's reply, I had to go look. ("Tamper-resistant or not, ain't nobody puttin' no toilet-stall screws on my Mossberg." :fire: )
But he's right; that's a "one-way slotted." I guess ol' O.F. didn't want me getting in there and messing up that little detent thingie.

I hope this doesn't portend a bunch of "quality time" with a motor tool. :cuss:

By the way, check out this Wikipedia page for more info than you ever wanted to know about screws. I just found out that the U.S. has different import duties for screws versus bolts, so there's a standard for which is which. :scrutiny:

Darn! I found this on the internet regarding the safety button replacement: "It requires the shotgun to be taken apart so you can connect it to the L-shaped block inside the receiver (which undoubtedly has now fallen into the action). DO NOT try to operate gun untilit is fixed. If done by a gunsmith, we're talking a 5 minute job." Of course, the tool to back-out the one-way slotted screw costs more than the safety button replacement itself. That, and I am not comfortable about taking the whole thing apart to do this "5 minute" cake walk. :fire: Hmmm, guess I will have to have a bonifide gunsmith do it...I think I'll wait til when I need something substantial done to it as well...hardly seems worth going to a gunsmith for a safety that works just fine.

Heh; thanks for the heads-up, DF. I won't be going after mine with any Golden Screwdriver, either.
Since it wants new sights, refinishing, and maybe some other work, replacing the safety is one more "learning experience" I can do without.

I replaced my stock safety with an extended plastic one, it kinda looks like a combover, lol.

Anyway, the directions for it said to keep pressure on the trigger while swapping it out, I used a zip-tie. I cant remember for sure if the safety had to be on or off, I think it had to be on.

And I just used a regular screwdriver to take that screw out.

Wouldn't a stripped screw extractor work to take the screw out?

I toyed with the idea of replacing mine, but never did. I've got 20+ year old Mossys still sporting the original plastic safety that work just fine. If they ever break I'll replace them with metal, but not until then.
