Vehicle Console Safe (Small)

Ok the console we’re talking about here is really small. Looking for something that can just barely hold a subcompact but still has quick and easy access.

I've got a console vault in my cherokee and am happy with it. They've got a pretty extensive list of cars they make for. FYI the console vault will reduce storage area from whatever you currently have, mostly because the lid is lower than the factory center console lid. The one on my Cherokee can fit a Glock 19 or so size pistol.

I also have a console vault in my Toyota 4Runner. My only complaint on it is the dial is difficult to read in low light.

Have you considered making one to fit?

The console "vaults" you see, like in the ones in the link posted above, are all sheet metal construction with simple cheap key locks. You could make a nice one out of wood, custom fit and with a lock at least as "secure" as any of those.

Unfortunately Console Vault doesn’t have my vehicle listed but thanks for the suggestion as I’ve messaged them to see if that can make something that fits (or if my vehicle’s console size matches another model).

We all have our skills in life to be grateful for and I’ve been blessed with my share. This however is not one of them. 😉

Look into FAS1, too. You will have to sort out how to bolt it to your console (presuming you have room). But, you get to have the leftover space for storage.

My gripe about the FoMoCo "safe" that would fit my '22 Escape is that it uses up all the console volume, and it's on your to pad or compartment the thing. That's after you accept the rather cheesy lock on it, too.

That Console Vault is a nice fit in an Escape--as long as you don't need the power outlet. But, it does offer some room up top for storage of stuff.

I have the keyless 4 digit lock on mine, not some "simple cheap key lock." They have these lock types available.

The goal of these console vaults is to prevent a smash and grab. Given enough time and the right tools they can be easily open.

RE the difficulty to read dial I posted earlier. There are games that can be played with that. You could turn each dial so it's 2 numbers off from the actual combination. But if you or your family member need a gun "right now," I would not keep it in one of these vehicle safes.

I plan to sell this vehicle in the next month or so. I will give my Console Vault to a female friend of mine that has the same vehicle and had a nice S&W 357mag revolver stolen out of it.

I hear you!

A few vehicles back, when I had a ham radio installed, I made a nice wood console to put it, and the linear amplifier, in. "Out of sight, out of mind" so to speak.

Excepting, of course, the big ole whip antenna on the car anyway.

The console had a split cover on it. One part accessed the face of the radio and amplifier, the other side a storage compartment. Even had a fan installed on the bottom of the amplifier to keep it cool.

There was still a void available for use, so I designed a sliding panel into the side where I could slip one of my pistols. The sliding panel wasn't noticeable unless you knew what to look for, so I never considered installing a lock.

The whole thing was screwed to the hump on the floor, partially under the dash, and fit comfortably in that spot between the driver and passenger sides.

Any type of lock box is better that nothing at all. Locks and such only keep honest people honest. The console vaults are real easy to get into with a hammer and screw driver. And remember that the first two places a thief looks into are the glove box and center console.

Something/anything with a Simplex Lock would be better than anything shown here.
That's 5 pages of pistol safes, I'm sure there is one that will fit into most consoles.
