My wife and I went shopping tonight looking for a good Home Defense 12 Guage Shotgun. I have an old Savage Over and Under it is a 20 guage and an old Montgomery Ward single shot 16 guage all inherited guns but was wanting a versatile 12 guage. The store had a Verona shotgun on sale it was an autoloader 12 guage for only $199. My question is are these any good and is that a good price? It was very basic looking and no frills but I want a decent 12 guage autoloader for home defense and don't really want to pay an arm and a leg Anyone know much about these shotguns? Thanks, I appreciate any help!

The troubles with offbrand shotguns are.....

There's no wide customer base to find out if owners are happy with their purchases.

Warranty work oft requires sending the thing back to Kazahkstan or wherever.

Foreign companies come and go, The Basques were infamous for this a few decades back.

If $200 is all you can spare, get a used 870, 500 or similar.

HTH.....

Everthing Dave said plus auto loaders are the least reliable actions. Even good ones have a higher failure to function than any other action. For home defense you don't want that.

I just traded a verona for a .22 I wanted, but while I had it it worked very well.Functioned as fast as I could pull the trigger.

I agree that a good used 870 or mossy pump is a better choice.Unjamming an autoloader in a hurry is just about impossible compared to a pump gun.

Thanks guys! I never thought of some of those aspects. I have never shot an autoloader before but thought it may be easier for my wfe to just pull and shoot. But if they are hard to clear and unjam then I don't want to deal with that. So Savage or Mossburg pumps are pretty reliable right? Which of those would be a preferred choice if any?

The Big Four pumps so oft scriven about here are the Remington 870, the Winchester 1300, Ithaca's venerable Model 37 and Mossberg's 500 series. Mossberg's po' relation, the Maverick, is made in Mexico and offers a lot of gun for the money.

All of these are excelent choices for HD and CD.

Savage has no pump in its lineup currently.

The 1300 was just discontinued, but there's lots out there, often at very good prices.

Any Big Four pump purchased used is a bargain. Per shot use breaks down to a fraction of a penny. None should wear out under 60K rounds and some will last far longer.
