I just started loading a couple of months ago. Was using IMR 700x as it is what I have on hand due to shotshell reloading.. Only loading 9mm and 357 mag right now and want something that isn't quite as "DIRTY" as 700x.

Please offer up suggestions...

HS-6, Power Pistol and Herco are superb for the 9MM. (Herco is truly suoperb, but doesn.t meter through powder measures as well as the others.)

For the .357 Magnum, I use H110 exclusively.

I like Power Pistol for 9mm also but HP38, Accurate #2 and #5 have given me good results too.

I'm still learning 357 mag and H110 has been good but I have been really taken with Alliant 2400. I shot up my first pound in about 3 weeks so I went back the other day and bought 3 more pounds of it. I should have bought that other can but I wanted to leave some for the next guy.

I've loaded some test rounds with Accurate #9 the past couple of days but I've not had a chance to shoot any of those yet. One thing I will say for #9, it meters like water. I'm hoping it works good with lead. I was a little disappointed with the results I got with 2400 and my Missouri Bullets. :(

Unique would work for both your calibers. But I think you would be happier with a faster powder for your 9 and a little slower one for your mag.

I load 7 different calibers with W231 (same as HP-38). It may not be the best for all of them, but you will get satisfactory results with it. I load 380 auto, 9mm, 40 s&w, 45 acp, 44 mag, 38 special and 357 mag. It is my "go to" powder.

700X has always been very clean for me, including 9MM and .38 Spl. Very versatile as well. Hmm.

If you want squeaky clean, get some Vihtavuori.

If you are not looking for high end loads in your 357 you could use bullseye in it and your 9mm. If you want top end loads bullseye is not a great choice.

Power Pistol is ideal in the 9mm Luger, and can also be used to develop some very useful "midrange" loads in the .357 Magnum. And of course, if Power Pistol is good then VihtaVuori 3N37 should be considered its more expensive cousin, albeit cleaner and having less muzzle flash.

If you are shooting cast lead bullets, a lot of the 'dirty' can come from lube and lead ''dust',they just shoot 'diriter' than jacketed, which is why a lot of ranges don't allow them..
Low end loads will also shoot a bit dirtier,I always go mid range at least on my loads if they shoot well, seems to seal the case better, and burn the powder a bit cleaner.

I use Blue Dot and 2400 for .357 magnum. I've used one or the other with jacketed, plated and hard-cast lead. I don't load 9mm.

700X was always clean for me also. Clean was one of the features I liked best about it. Unique or Universal will serve you well in both of these cartridges. Universal will meter better though. Probably more data out in the world for Unique.

All the Best,
D. White

The 700x in teh 9mm isn't so bad but I seem to have a LOT of powder residue on the cylinder of my 357 mag and I don't like that ...... :)

I might buy a pound of W231 as those are the same calibers that I have.... and see how I like it..

Thanks
