I store my guns and reloading supplies in a locked closet. The rifles and shotgun are leaned up against the walls and corners in the closet.

A few months ago, I had something fall off of one of the shelves causing all the rifles to slide into each other, causing a few scratches and a couple of serious dings in a wood stock. So, I have been looking, rather unsucessfully, for an inexpensive and simple gun rack that would hold the weapons vertically and securely in the closet. I don't want to spend money on a gun safe right now.

Anyone know where I can buy a vertical gun rack or find some building plans for a rack that could be installed in a hall closet?

I'm also interested in building a rifle rack for the range. Again, know where I could find some building plans?

if yer lookin for practical and functional not looks try getting a 1x4 board and then cut out notches in the wood to put the gun barrels into. to mount it just pre drill holes into the board where the stud are and then screw it onto the wall into the studs. also, how is your range set up? how much room do you have? ive never been to a range before so i have no idea how they are set up. can ya get some pics?

Buy a safe

Taking the highroad, one would say part of responsible gun ownership is locking or securing a firearms to prevent a theft.

With the world of meth addicts, put the money that would be used for one gun purchases towards the purchase of a safe and bolt is SECURELY to your structure.

I hate thieves and I would feel terrible if someone used one of my weapons to injury another person.

I just put up one of these http://gunracks.tylerrose.com/

It's not the greatest in that someone clever with a wrench could get it unscrewed given enough time, but it keeps the guns upright, is inexpensive (I got it cheap off ebay) and it lock so that a curious kid or a random smash-and-grabber would not access the guns.

I have a couple of the Stack-On 8 gun cabinets for that sort of thing. Cost runs about $90 from Wal-Mart and Shipton's up here. They will hold 8 long guns vertically and lock up. They are only medium gauge metal but definitely kid-proof and a lot better than nothing. They fit nicely in a closet and to me are the most cost-effective approach for keeping guns at least somewhat secured. They can be bolted to the floor or wall as desired.

Another option is just a few lengths of 1x4 screwed to the walls and then drilling a series of holes in them and buying some "shaker pegs". similar to what a lot of people put up to hold clothes or coffee cups in the pantry. These keep the upright guns from sliding too far if they slide. just short sections of Dowels cut to four inch lengths and glued in the holes will work too.
