Tragic story. Both the husband and wife had CHL's, but both were unarmed when attacked (5 to 5:30am on a Sunday morning in a good neighborhood, while walking/jogging).

The writeup from John Farnam:

http://www.defense-training.com/quips/25Mar09.html

25 Mar 09

Lessons from calamity. This from a friend in VA:

"This past Sunday, at 5:00 AM, a young couple was jogging together,as they regularly did, in the local neighborhood where they lived, only a few miles from where I live.

Both were precipitously attacked by multiple VCAs. The man was murdered (beaten to death), and the woman is in the hospital, in critical condition. Police have no leads nor significant evidence to reveal the identity of the attackers. The woman may recover enough to provide information. She may not!

The attackers, two or three, emerged from a parked car and used baseball bats or similar blunt instruments. Robbery was the apparent motive, at least at the beginning.

These facts have emerged:

(1) Both victims were CCW-permit holders, but neither was armed at the time and place of the fatal attack.

(2) The man was a decorated Special Forces Soldier (retired), trained in hand-to-hand fighting.

(3) The attack took place in broad-daylight, in a quiet, upscale, residential community.

The community is stunned, of course. Police are doing the best they can, but cases where attackers and victims don't know each other and have no obvious connection are difficult to solve."

Lessons:

(1) We call them "side-arms" for a reason. At least one needs to be "at your side" all the time. Aspire to be a competent, self-contained, independent Operator. And, expect neither support nor understanding from naive VBCs.

(2) Don't arbitrarily divide your life into "safe" and "dangerous" parts, places, nor activities. Fate may neglect to celebrate your dear fantasy! I know people who have CCW-permits, but don't carry, and they're ever-ready to treat me to a nauseating dissertation of their idiotic excuses. The foregoing exposes the lethal fallacy of such self-deceptive thinking.

(3) When your spouse (either gender) is squeamish about "the whole gun-thing, " help them get over it. You need a partner, not a burden!

(4) Be aware of "pattern-behavior." Regularly change-up routines. Don't become predictable. Stalkers will use your predictable routine against you, as was likely the case here.

(5) Don't deceive yourself that your martial-arts training/prowess will protect you against heavy odds. No matter how many black-belts you have, against multiple, simultaneous VCAs, you will likely not prevail, when unarmed. A single, dashing hero, casually dispatching several bad guys with glamorous judo-moves, is something that happens only in movies!

(6) "Police protection" is a contradiction of terms! Don't fill your head with false expectations with regard to actual services police can provide. Police investigators are basically "armed archeologists." We might catch these guys, and we might not. Patrol officers may be there to help you, and they may not. We get paid the same either way. And, whatever we manage to accomplish after you're dead, will probably be of scant interest to you anyway!

/John

News verification, other details, apparently no suspects yet:

Ah well. Cannot win em all.

Maybe thier loss will teach the rest of us, reinforce and perhaps save another someday when they feel tired and want to leave the gun at home.

And, whatever we manage to accomplish after you're dead, will probably be of scant interest to you anyway!

Truer words were never spoken.

VCA= Violent Criminal Actor I don't know about VBC, maybe Victim By Choice?

Carry your gun(s)!

One of the news stories said the attack actually happened at 5:38am, but still, you're correct--that's not "broad daylight." Civil twilight wouldn't have occurred until 6:30 or so, so it was pretty dark.

Dark enough for a planned strike against a victim who has not changed thier routine jog it seems.

My wife and I dont jog, but we do try as much as possible to vary our routine day to day.

I hate to be stupid and say this but isnt that such a waste because both of the Joggers left thier weapons at HOME? All the expenses, training, learning, ammo etc etc etc... down the drain.

While all of John Farnam's points should be heeded, this one in particular has special meaning to me and one I have stressed forever.

Folks, times are tough, and they will become tougher. Some of the same things that happened in '80, when gold went over $800 an ounce and the economy was bad, are happening again.

When summer hits, along with the increase in temperature so will crime, it always does.

One never knows the where or when of their next encounter.

Ah well. Cannot win em all.

Must be friends of the family.

Murder was up 300% over last year and will probably continue to rise. The near defeat of the Columbian gangs left a vacuum that is being filled by the Meixcan gangs among others throughout the South. Virginia is a "border" state in the drug war and will likely see some rough times this year. Loudon County is about as safe as Fairfax County was 20 years ago, but the times are a 'chagin.

I guess what I am saying is never think you are safe, no matter where you are.

Titan6, What I said about cannot win em all is a concession to a mental attitude that not every battle will be a victory. There will be some losses along the way. The best I can do is learn a lesson such as always be prepared no matter what.

SM, Im particularly worried about the coming spring and summer nights this year. We aint seen nothing yet. Im appreciative of chain season being brutal and long, but once it warms up like you say.. it's not good.

Not this year.

So get ready is all I can say. Maybe 10 of us will have a fight and lose one or two out of that ten. This is not a perfect world where everyone gets to be safe.

If my number is called (And I have heard that call over yonder a few times in my life...) Im going. But not on my knees begging.

Yeah, Fact #3 is pretty silly, so are some of the lessons.

Lesson 1-So what if "they" call the sidearms for a reason. They call them lots of things for lots of reasons.

I am sure he considered himself a self contained operator, being retired special forces and all.

Lesson #2- We don't know that the guy divded his life into safe and dangerous parts.

Lesson#3-There is no indication that either spouse was squeamish about guns, so how is this a lesson from this story?

Lesson#5-There is no indication of self deception.

Lesson#6-There is no indication that the vics had any sort os misconceptions about "police protection."

A lot of these "lessons" are well and good, but just don't have any clear link to the story in question.

I wonder if it was a hit.It could have been random, but even a retired SFtroopie usually has retained some pretty good awareness/alertness hardwiring.I am wrong quite a bit,but this smells like a hit to me....

Maybe, he was also a contractor for the agency. I would not say it is outside the realm but there is no evidence of that yet.

Folks, being punctual, prompt, and predictable, may sound "well and good" but these things make you easier prey for predators.

How many of hunters set up game cameras to find out where deer, turkey, and other game will be, and at what time of day?

Dove hunters know their "prey" and "habitat" (grain, water, grovel, eyesight...etc.) as they know the behavior of doves therefore "position" themselves where they can fell doves.

Many folks never think about some persons being more "inviting" as a "target" or "prey".
For some unknown reason many folks never think about the fact there are different Models of Criminals.

WE don't know the details of this couple in the original post. It was tragic, and until we have confirmed details, I am not going to disrespect the couple by playing "what if" .

My point is, some may recognize and accept someone that is a Branch Bank Mgr, is more "inviting" a target than say a 18 year old sacking groceries at a Mom & Pop grocery store.

Even so, neither the bank manager or 18 year old, should be "predictable".

The bank mgr will often be trained to change up routes to places, routines and change appointment times , such as the time a lady gets her hair done, or some fella goes to play racquetball.
For sure, having it be suggested to jog with others, never alone, and in different places, at different times, and different routes.
Even jogging or playing ball in a gym, indoors, they will change up routes to and from the gym, the days they attend, and times.

That 18 year old, sacking groceries...
All a predator has to do is observe.

Now keep in mind, many models of criminals work in teams, and folks never realize others were involved in taking them down.

So Predators notice a 18 yr old sacking groceries, they also assist in unloading delivery trucks, stocking shelves, taking out trash to be bundled...

Snag that 18 year old, and the Mom & Pop can be forced to open a safe, and maybe while some are getting money, cigarettes, others are raping one of the young check out girls...

The most dangerous times for a business is when they are opening up, and closing.
Every criminal , even if they cannot read , can figure out when a business opens and closes.
Retail for example often has employees arrive early to get the store ready before customers come in.
Snag an employee going in, the store is not open for business, and crooks can do all sorts of things and the retail public never knows what is going on inside.

Ditto for closing, as many retail businesses, lock the door , and put the store back in order.
Snag an employee, say taking out the trash, and again, who is going to know what is going on inside?

I have a real bone to pick with some Corporations, Managers, and Folks in charge with this Obsessive Compulsive, Anal Retentive attitude.

Some to "show authority" and to "show the public" post these instructions as to what time the trash is taken out for instance.

Hey, while Idiot was stroking Ego with this Control Freak attitude, criminals just wait for the trash to be taken out.

How many Food places have been robbed, and serious results, before a business opened to the public, closed to the public and employees still inside, and the trash taken out?
Lots!

If you are on the "alarm list" , in the event your alarm goes off...you had better call the alarm company to make sure they called.

I was called once, in the wee hours, having been up for a long time and it was the crooks that had called and were waiting outside for me to just sleepy walk to my vehicle ... to go answer the alarm.

The stupid business had the name of the alarm company with logo to make customers feel good...
Stupid loud mouth business owner with a business in the same block, blabbed to crooks what area of town I lived.
Actually, I did not live there, I did use that location from time to time, but I did not live there.
Crooks got lucky and gained the phone number from a gal that they knew working for the phone company for that address, and called that number.

Still they were not sure, as the vehicles they were looking for, were not in the lot.
I was a royal pain in the butt to peg...vehicles were another thing I used to give perceptions.
Meaning, I was liable to be driving anything at any given time.

Lady Luck showed, my gut said something was not right, and then I spotted them and got back inside.
I called my people, then police, then alarm company.
Alarm company had not called.

Times are tough and are going to get worse.
One would be wise to be brutally honest and access themselves as to how they would take themselves down.
Then take prudent steps to prevent being a target in the first place.

It does not matter if one has been in Special Forces, a Bank Manager, a House-husband, Housewife, school teacher, student, works in a fast food joint or sacks groceries, or...

Sometimes it ain't what you got, instead what some think you have, or can gain them access to , that makes you a target.

.

Times are always tough for somebody. Bad guys exist in good times and in bad. Nobody cares one iota about crime rates when they are the one being victimized. People who are thinking that they need to be wary now that times are getting bad are already well behind the curve.

It is interesting that the husband is noted by Farnam as being retired special forces as he was also a retired CIA contractor.

http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...udoun-County-Trail.html?corder=&pg=1#comments

I am curious as to how Farnam knew that neither were carrying at the time of the attack. If the motive was robbery and the couple was robbed, then my guess is that their guns would have been taken as well. The wife didn't tell them anything, right? After all, she may never be able to tell them anything. The only way they identified the husband was from his fingerprints as he didn't have any ID on him at the time. Were his belongings all taken?

Sorry, it just strikes me as odd that such specificities are known about the incident, but that there are no clues of significance.
Police have no leads nor significant evidence to reveal the identity of the attackers. The woman may recover enough to provide information. She may not!

I got a real kick out of the video on this page... http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/l...udoun-County-Trail.html?corder=&pg=1#comments

Not only did the attack not happen in broad daylight as Farnam claimed, but Benntt didn't like to go out in daylight and didn't exercise unless it was dark...according to his neighbor.

VCA may be "violent criminal aggressor", instead of "actor"....

In any event, tragic. :(

Speculation: *IF* it is ever confirmed that he was unarmed, odds are better than even that the wifey frowned on carrying being the reason he wasn't armed. Maybe, maybe not, but why else wouldn't a red-blooded CCW holder be carrying on a jog away from home & safety?

From the Gibson article, linked above:

"I phoned the sheriff’s office Tuesday night and asked for a description of the suspects. The officer on the other end of the line was extremely hesitant to talk about it, and said she “did not know.” I told her that one article had given the description of one of the suspects as being heavier than the other, but nothing else was offered. I simply wanted to know weight, height, age, race, etc., to place in my article…She remained silent. I then asked the anonymous woman (she refused to give me her name), if she knew about the Bennett murder, after a very long pause, she answered with a timid “yes.”"

I strongly suspect "men of middle-eastern descent."

Raids in theater have uncovered personal information on servicemen and contractors, their families, so forth.

The wife also had a CCW so your speculation doesn't really make that much sense.

Maybe the guy wasn't carrying because his gun is really heavy and it sucks to jog and carry at the same time. (yes, it also sucks to jog and get beat up/robbed).

Maybe, as someone pointed out, he was carrying and the gun was stolen after the beating. If the guys in the car moved quickly enough then the husband/wife might not have had time to react.

I read the Washington Post's original story and found it to be quite curious. My first thought was.... he's too young to have retired-retired. So what's he been doing since he left the Agency in 2000? He's working for somebody, and it probably isn't Wal-Mart or the public school system. Okay, I've been watching too much 24 and The Unit, I admit it.

"A Loudoun County man slain while out for an early morning walk with his wife worked as a contractor at the Central Intelligence Agency for several years until 2000, the CIA confirmed yesterday,"

"Simpson said investigators are also trying to determine whether the retired lieutenant colonel with the Army Special Forces has held any jobs since leaving the CIA."

I love that part about "...has held any jobs...?

Probably somebody he knew is my guess, but maybe it was just a random assault.

Honestly, what's the average .357 snubbie weigh? Or a short barreled Glock? No excuses there. I don't even sit in my living room watching TV without a sidearm.

Ya know, even when I am doing my TKD workouts, I am carrying my Glock. The extra 26 ounces of pistol/ammo don't interfere. This article re-affirms in my mind that I am doing the right thing.
