Sweet. Now I want a K31....:(

What was that "ring" sound after you fired? Were you skipping your rounds off the pole next to you?

whats a price scale for K31's

im familiar with them on a basic level
(swiss, straight pull, carbine and rifle)

but are there differant models, differant factorys, wahts a price scale?

whats a price scale for K31's

www.aimsurplus.com has them for 150$. Of course, you can go up from there, but not by a whole bunch. They are pretty inexpensive. I've been wanting one for a while and now I've seen some of the decent, non-corrosive ammo come up pretty cheap lately, so I may buy one. Ammo prices have kept me away thus far.

So how did it shoot crosshair?

K31s - Best milsurp value around

A K31 is a K31. There weren't different factories but there are some variations; beech vs walnut stock, SIG vs Hammerli barrels.

I paid about $125 for mine in VG+ condition with a Beech stock. Aim has G+ grades for $110 and Classic Arms has them for $130. They are very well made and are noted for being some of the most accurate milsurps ever. The triggers are 2 stage and are by far the smoothest and best triggers of any standard issue milsurp.

The surplus ammo, called 7.5 Swiss or GP-11, is practically match-grade. The only downside to this gun is that the ammo is fairly expensive; about $160/480 rounds. Wolf recently started making 7.5 Swiss but I think it's more than the Swiss GP-11. The Swiss GP-11 is non-corrosive, but it is Berdan primed. Wolf brass is boxer primed and Graf & Sons sells Boxer primed brass for it.

Check out this site for a lot of good info on K31s.

Recoil is similar to a 30-06. It'd make a GREAT deer cartridge but I don't know if Wolf makes SP ammo for it or not. Norma might if you want to spend that much.

Long story short... Get one. Its a no-brainer.

Oh, and, nice vid Crosshair. Any day at the range with your K31 is a pleasant one. (the shoulder might not be so pleasant the next day, though!)

i've heard 7.5swiss compared favorably to a .308, so it should be fine for deer. a number of companies, such as hornady, prvi partisan, wolf, and norma make soft-points.

Too bad they don't make a 100 round drum for the K-31....that would be fun...

Seriously though, do the K-31 have any mag other than the 6 rounders?

kick

My K31 doesn't seem to kick as hard as my Rem 742 30-06. Considering the K31 has a metal buttplate that says something. I'm sure its the weight of the gun that eases the kick. The Swiss and the Wolf ammo has a 174 grain bullet whereas I use 180 grain 30-06 and some people use 165 grain 30-06. The difference in the bullet is that the K31 bullet is a smaller caliber (the bullet in a 30-06 is .30 cal which is 7.62mm and the Swiss is 7.5mm.) I bought a clamp on scope mount for mine and a couple of boxes of Wolf soft point shells in addition to 2 sleeves of the GP-11. I have to sight in the scope in the next couple of days and if that works out OK, I think I'll let the Remington take a backup position this deer season.

Time to answer some questions.

What was that "ring" sound after you fired?

The muzzle blast is like a small hammer on the steel frame of the roof and makes it ring. There was a guy with a 300 Ultra Mag a few weeks ago. Now THAT made the frame ring.

So how did it shoot crosshair?

I was hitting the 100 yard steel plate, (Can't hear the *THUNK* on the video) but I think it is shooting a little low. I think the windage is right on. I'll shoot a paper target next time.

i've heard 7.5swiss compared favorably to a .308

Top end 7.5x55 loads are the same as mid range 308 loads.

That guy in the back ground cracked me up. He looked like he was confused for few shots while watchin ya.

lol, I never noticed that. I have no idea why he was looking at me like that. Look at the box of shells I have next to me. I had shot off 12 rounds before I shot that video so he would have seen me shooting. Oh well.

do the K-31 have any mag other than the 6 rounders?

Nope, 6 is all that where made. The earlier rifles had a 12 round mag, but that was considered too bulky. They will not fit in a K-31 as far as I know.

7.5x55 uses a .308 bullet. Go figure.

Yea, the earlier version of the 7.5x55 used a .298 bullet. Starting with the K-11 they switched to a .308 bullet. That is why reloading manuals warn not to use the loads listed in Model 1889 rifles. Kind of like how a 44 Magnum today uses a .429" bullets.

AIM Surplus has some relativly inexpencive 7.5x55 ammo. Prvi Partizan seems to be the best deal. $85 for 200 rounds. The cases are Boxer primed and reloadable, unlike the Berdian primed GP-11. Buying the loaded ammo is cheaper than buying just the brass.:) Grafs & Sons 7.5x55 Brass. That is what I plan to do. Buy the ammo, shoot it, and reload it.

The Prvi is good stuff and the brass works well for reloading. As mentioned earlier the 7.5swiss is similar to the .308. It uses a larger case than the .308 but the pressures are lower. As a mechanical standpoint, the K31 is magnificently made. I've read elsewhere that if Winchester made these rifles today, they would have to sell them for $1500-$2000 to cover their expenses.
