No politics but maybe a little bias against those evil semiautos...

Rifles:
When they are working, semiautomatic weapons are amazingly fast. However, they are very sensitive to dirt and weather, and tend to malfunction much more than bolt, pump, or lever actions. They are also terribly dangerous.

Handguns:
Semiautomatic weapons can shoot faster than revolvers with greater ease of holding on the target. Their lack of reliability in Alaska’s harsh weather make them more dangerous than rifles.

It would be interesting to discover whether there have been more hunters or bears shot with handguns. In the hands of a mature experienced person, they are useful, but the handgun hazard is often greater than the bear threat

'semi-automatic' doesn't get standing as an action type (it's tacked on the end of 'lever action') or a bold faced sub heading--the bias sounds like lack of personal experience on the part of the author with a good rugged semi-auto. For Alaska, a lever gun is probably more common I would bet.

Nice piece, very matter of fact.

Given it's provenance, I would love to see someone work this into a school in the lower 48 (with permission of the author, of course).
 
Yeah, I was wondering about the semi-auto thing. Since it's written for kids, maybe they're erring on the side of caution. I also wondered why they didn't do the Four Rules or anything safety related like that.
