Updating a post I made a few weeks ago concerning my long-owned .22 long rifle Springfield 1922 II and my newly acquired vintage Lyman Junior Target Spot 8x target scope. At that time, I had only fired one test group that looked pretty good. Since then I have fired a few more groups and I am simply amazed at what this old 1927 built .22 will do (arsenal rebarreled and updated in 1934). It shot well with the aperture sights (consistently all in the 10-ring of an NRA 50 yard small bore target), but it’s ability to shoot consistently small groups with the old scope is very pleasing to me. These groups were shot with Lapua Center-X ammo at 50 yards and the seven groups average .31 inches. Throwing out one group would have put the average well into the 2's.
I have been fortunate to own several beautiful “target sporters” over the years, some with fine barrels (Lilja), great triggers (2 oz. Jewel), and several with 18 to 20 power scopes. Some (but not all) of those rifles will beat this old Springfield, but not by much!! Especially considering this old rifle has only an 8X ancient scope, an almost 4-pound trigger, and is being run by a 70 year old. Imagine what it would do with a good shooter, a one-pound trigger, and a 20-power scope!
