Since 7.62x39 has been harder to get in bulk lately except via mail order, I'd been on the lookout for an AK in 5.56x45. I find .223 just about everywhere, and you can still get it reasonably priced (for rifle ammunition). I figured a stamped SAR3 with a side-folding stock would be a decent rifle for plinking and other uses. I hadn't been able to find one for a reasonable price online (most were $550+ and climbing).

So I was out tonight at the range sighting in a .22 with a very old scope. It did very well, and I think that combination (Marlin 795/Weaver 2.5) will be lots of fun. I headed to the store counter to pay for range time, when I see what looks like some milled AK's behind counter. Very interesting, because this store hardly ever carries the nicer AK's. I asked to take a look, and low and behold, it's a new Arsenal SA M-5 in 5.56x45 w/pinned muzzle brake. It was sleek, black, "evil", and it was calling my name.

I've seen these on GoneBroker for $1000 and up. Impact has them for $699 (plus shipping and transfer for me). I didn't *steal* it, but I think I got a good deal: $715 OTD for the rifle NIB w/accessories, and two new 30-round Arsenal magazines.

Range report will have to wait, unless I can get the friend visiting this weekend to go to the range with me.

Maybe. I'm looking around for something like a Romanian folding stock that will fit a milled receiver. There's one that VEPR makes, but doesn't look like it'll work with milled. If I can find a flash hider instead of a muzzle brake, I might go with that. Otherwise I'm fine with it as it is.

Had just about an hour this afternoon to try and get the rifle sighted in, using 55gr FMJ American Eagle. This was from a bench at 50 yards, after 12 rounds of adjusting the sights on a different target.

Some of it was more rapid fire and that's the flyers. The rest was aimed slow fire. Not too bad for a start. I was also able to pepper a 200 yard gong with much for frequency than previously with my SKS.

So far so good. I intend to use nothing lighter than 60gr bullets, so I'll have to work with it again next weekend.

Sweet rifle. IMHO the Bulgarian milled receiver rifles from Arsenal, Inc. are the best AKs. I have an SLR-101 SG in 7.62x39, which has been nicer than any Romanian, Russian, or Chinese AK that I've owned or shot.

Hmmm...seems like I might just have found the replacement for the LM5 I originally wanted...what a nice-looking piece of kit.
