It's been my experience that VLD performs best when jammed in to the lands. I'm not a particular fan of them but others swear by them, probably all comes down to what your barrel likes.
Problem with VLD is a load early on in a barrel's life may not work the same later, due to throat erosion, especially for magnum calibers with shorter barrel life. While VLD shot fine in my 300 win mag, I went back to the 220gr sierra because it was my experience on my last barrel that things just change too fast.
When the thing you count on for accuracy (lands engagement) is a moving target over the course of a rifle's life, it just doesn't make much sense. On non-magnum rifles, with barrel life in the 10s of thousands of rounds, sure, makes a lot more sense.
But on something like a 22-250 or 300 win mag, where the barrel life is a couple thousand rounds, I'd rather just stick to what has always worked.
What is barrel life on a 6.5 creedmoor? I didn't go that route when I rebarreled, cost of retooling for a new caliber was too high at the time, so I stuck with 300 win mag.
