Vortex or Zeiss

cdb1, the comments made me stop and really think about that and I appreciate you're honest feedback. It's true that everyone's eyes are different and my use of a 30 mm tube may not be reflective of other opinions. It's kind of like how everyone taste's spinach. I like it but some may not!

I will just have to drive to the nearest cabelas and look though a viper and a viper hs to see if I can tell any discernable difference. Also once I get this rifle set up I will post pictures and a range report

If you are going to Cabela's why not look at several brands of scopes in the same price range? Leupold, Nikon, Burris, Bushnell and Meopta along with the Vortex?

Well, I really like creamed spinach.

Even though you are looking at the same field of view such as 10.8 feet at 100 yards, the image to the human eye appears larger through a 30 mm tube than it does through a one inch tube. It's like looking at a 19 inch computer monitor as compared to a 15 inch monitor. The image on the computer screen is identical but the 19 inch screen is larger. Maybe some people just haven't noticed the difference.
As far as I know - the image that your eye sees is a result of the size and design of the ocular lens assembly and not the tube diameter.

I am going to look at a couple Leopolds and Ill see if they have a Burris but I don't like how Nikon handles their warranty I bought a prostaff5 years ago and out of the box it was broken they wanted me to pay for shipping and refused to warranty it if I didn't have the original receipt as well I thought that it was a poor way to do business as the scope shouldn't have left the factory also at the time it was 450 dollar scope and now I don't buy Nikon scopes. I still buy their cameras but but that is because no one else comes close to Nikon dslr cameras in my opinion. As far as Bushnell goes I have a few of them and they don't look as clear or bright as the vortex diamond back hp I have

I have a scope mounting business. I also work part time at Cabela's and mount scopes there. Cabela's sells all of the scopes I mentioned. It could be that you don't see well out of Nikon. I don't. Most people see better out of certain brands of scopes than others.

The Terra is overpriced for what you get. They want you to see the name and think you're getting German glass (and pay accordingly), when they're really giving you Phillipine glass. I almost fell for it when I first heard about them, since prior to that Zeiss only put out high quality glass. I'm glad I researched (and looked through one with a critical eye) before I bought.

Of course the various Vortex Viper lines and the Diamondback are Phillipine glass too. Which is fine, as long as you aren't expecting Japanese, U.S., German, or Austrian glass.

I would take that money and get a Leupold VX3 if I were you.

Jeez, the things people put on the Internet... the tube diameter of a scope has nothing to do with the level of magnification you get. That is all in the lenses. The only advantages a larger diameter tube has are that they can be built thicker/stronger while still having room for the internal components; and that it is possible to fit an erector assembly with more elevation adjustment inside a larger tube.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it... you MAY be able to find one of the older Zeiss Conquest scopes with the Meopta glass. EXCELLENT scope for the money if you can find one in stock anywhere.
