First all, I have never had a red dot on any of my guns. What is your opinion on the above. I will probably put it on an 1895 45-70 to plink some with then it will probably end up on a budget ar I have or a ruger mark ii competition target pistol.

Vortex red dots are great. I had a Strikefire on an AR for a long time, and it served me very well. If I got another red dot (I moved to a Bushnell 1-4x PCL Throwdown and I'm loving the 1-4x life), then I think I would get a Sparc. It's lighter, and all one really "needs" in a red dot.

You have a few good budget red dot options. Those include Primary Arms, the Bushnell TRS-25, and Vortex. I'm partial to Vortex mostly because of the push button controls. Quality is similar for all of them, but the Vortex feels the most solid.

I had one of those for a while. One of the better values in a dot sight and if you really want one that is the way I'd go.

I just found that a low powered 1-4X scope did everything better. They aren't much larger and heavier. On 1X they are just as fast, they are better in low light, cost is about the same and when set on 4X offer plenty of magnification for longer shots. That is what I went to after selling my dot sights.

I have an original sparc on a rifle. I don't expect it to do anything special, just be a red dot sight. In that role, I'm very happy with it. The particular rifle doesn't get intentionally abused, but it does get banged around a little. The sight has held zero. It's not warranted to be "bomb-proof" like the Aimpoint Pro, but at half the cost I consider it a winner. I'm considering another for a similar rifle.

I bought one to put on my turkey gun, but I ordered an ar at the same time and it ended up on the black rifle with no regrets what so ever. It's a great optic!
