I see in my new issue (August/September 2018) of Guns and Ammo Handguns that the new Kimber Aegis Elite Custom OI comes standard with a red dot sight on a milled slide. Right on the cover. But it isn't a Trijicon RMR or Leupold DeltaPoint Pro. Nope, it is a Vortex Venom 6 MOA almost like the one I just put on my Ruger SR1911 9mm Commander. Mine differs in being 3 MOA.

The gun lists at $1,395 (45 ACP) or $1,415 (9 mm) and could have supported a pricier optic, but it just wasn't necessary. That is a big coup for a mid-market red dot. But I am not surprised. I think that this breakthrough signals a sea change brought on my trickle down technology and competition. The market will soon accept that the amount one has to spend to get a top notch red dot isn't $500+ but more like $200-300. Times change. It can take a while for the market to figure that out, but sooner or later it happens. It has been only a matter of time before the necessity of having the $500+ optic would be realized as "old news". I think we are there now.

Shall we discuss?

I currently have 4 different vortex red dots and couldn’t be happier. The size and battery life as well as customer support/lifetime no questions asked warranty... I’m not sure how they still sell the $500 plus red dots.

Vortex has "wrecked the curve" on pricing in several optics/sighting segments over the years. B+/A- stuff at the price you'd expect to pay for C-grade quality.

Best red dot for the money. Their customer service and warranty need to be emulated by more manufacturers.

I have several Vortex products and am just fine with the them. I have the Venom 3 moa on my 15-22 and really like it. I'm ok with Holosun also. Have 2. My newest is a HS510C reflex (2 moa) on my new 10.5" pistol. Compared to the Venom it's huge and weighty. Sure do like that big window it has though. Unbelievably, I have yet to buy a PA optic but wouldn't hesitate to do so. Without banging, dropping, swimming the Caspian Sea, etc, my throw away Fieldsports are still hanging in there and accurate, etc. Believe I paid top dollar for them at approx 20.00 and 23.00. Seen 'em as low as 18-19. Ripped off I'm telling you. Have the micro-red dot on my 10/22 and the reflex on an 8.5" pistol. Keep on ticking.

The $500+ dot optics still have a place, if like me you won't trust batteries for SD use. I've Trijicon dual illuminated (tritium, fiber optic) on my carry pistols and practice duplicates. My fun guns make good use of Fastfires.

Trijicon RMR needs no batteries, Under $450, rugged, that's what I went with:)
