Hi, everybody,

I'm going t'be a freshman at Virginia Tech in August, and I'd very much like to take my Maverick 88 with me (Not so much the Mini. I'd rather sell that thing) for HD and all that jazz. Thing is, as a Freshman, I'll be required to live on campus, in a dorm, car locked up in The Cage and everything. All of that brings me to my question: Does anybody know the rules and regulations as to keeping a firearm in VPI's dorms? Additionally, for later on (when I'm 21), what's the campus policy in concealed carry?

I would've emailed somebody at VT, but I don't want to give any weird impressions... "Yeah, can I keep my shotgun under my bed?"

You should talk to the campus police. I know several of the colleges in VA have a store room for the firearms and such of students under the control of the campus police. At my school, you aren't allowed to have "weapons" in your room (whatever the hell that means). I don't believe CCW is allowed, but you should check with the campus police and packing.org

I can tell you what happens at Michigan Tech. Guns go in a room in the basement. Each student has their own locker, with a combo lock. You have the combo for the lock, as does the MA for the building. The outer door is also locked, and you need an RA to unlock it for you.

Guns and ammo are not allowed in the dorm rooms, and I can assure you that you do not want to leave a firearm in a college dorm room, unless you can get some sort of safe in there. Even then, I wouldn't. Too many people in and out, and you also have others living with you. Also, you would need to get your roommate's take on guns, are they responsible, knowledgable, maybe a hardcore anti who would do anything to get the guns out of the room, etc.

I can almost assure you that guns in the room are a no-no everywhere. If you have a CCW permit, I know at least in MI that doesn't matter. Still a no-no.
