I hate to find myself in the "stupid question" catagory, but............Where in the @#$% do I find someone to work on my Walker? Every gunsmith I've taken it to here in NC has just looked at me and shaken his head and said "I don't know much about replicas"

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places, I'd be willing to send it off to get fixed. The screws I can order, but every time I cock it now it over rotates and the gap between the cylider and barrel has gotten bigger over time. It probably needs a new wedge. I just need someone to look at it and say "it's too far gone" or "yes, I can fix it"

*Sorry for the rant*

Needless to say

the timing is way off on the hand now and cylinder stop isn't doing its job too . If the barrel block face is tight up against the frame and you still have a big sloppy gap betweeen forcing cone and cylinder , get a new cylinder possibly . Most replica cylidners are much softer than the frames , if you've been shooting POUNDING loads out of her or it was an exceptionally weak metal on the cylinder it can wear out . Check back of frame to see if that has big marks in it from cylinder smashing into the rear of the frame. If that is the case , its worn out . If not , replace cylinder . Check to make sure you have not lossened up your cylinder arbor too though first . It will never have the right gap if the arbor has worked forward . Been there done that on a 51 before . Let me guess , ASM brand ?

When I lived in Flordia , not only did nboody hardly work on these guns but they were rare in any stores , even Bass Pro Shop . I found people there to be very lazy and into Modern guns way more .

Good luck , Jaeger

Yes it is an ASM...........Thanks for the reply, I may just "retire" this one and purchase one from Uberti. This Walker was the first handgun I ever purchased and I'm quite certain ignorance played a part in it's current condition, as I would cram as much Pyrodex as I possibly could into the chambers and then force the balls in, sometimes shaving off some lead as I rotated the cyinder..........I sure had fun though! As it stands, it is the only BP pistol I've ever purchased, all the others look so..............small..LOL!

I wish these type of forums exsisted back when I purchased it and I wouldn't have abused it so much.............But like I said, I had fun doing it.

So

what of any of those conditons exhist that I mentioned besides it being ASM ?

Get another one ! :D You know you can't live without one you know , hee hee hee . I think a new Uberti is in order this time , and your new found appreciation of less abuse :D Another hint here too is I only shoot 2F real BP , much less pounding and lots more flame and smoke ! That is what they were designed to shoot anyways , as well , use conicals to get more powder burn on the 2F , being a heavier bullet going out the barrel . They can handle 3F just fine too , but the SMOKE AND FLAME of 2F is very cool !

Good luck , Jeager

Google up SASS (Single Action Shooting Society). They have some gunsmiths that specialize in single action and cap & ball revolvers. I have little doubt that it can be fixed, but the cost of doing so might be better spent on a newer gun.

Incidentally, the steel used today in replicas is far superior to that in the original guns, but you may need a new bolt spring to stop the cylinder from over-rotating. If the wedge is all of the way in and won’t go any further then it does need to be replaced. This is by far the most likely reason for any excessive cylinder/barrel gap. Also if necessary the present cylinder arbor (pin) can be set back by a turn or so, as it’s threaded.

But that said, get an estimate before you have any work done.

Is pyrodex Bad to shoot threw your pistols. Its what i have right now. But maybe i should stop & order something else for my smokers. = new army 44 by F.llipietta, Spiller & burr brass framed 36 call, & the Walker that i just bought from JCT. I dont shoot the SPillER enough to worry about it. But i love the new army 44, & will be banging away with the NEW army 44 & Uberty walker when it gets hear. Thanks guys

Try working the action with the gun pointed straight up in the air, if that does not keep it from over rotating, then try working the action with the cylinder removed. On a Walker, the bolt should pop up through the window at just about the same point as the hammer reaches the full cock position.

husker, there ain't nothin' wrong with Pyrodex. It's as close to real BP as you can get. It does require more detail to cleaning than the subs, as it still has sulfur and KNO3. From my experience it will produce a bit faster velocity than an equivalent load of BP. And I've also found it to be a bit slower to ignite. I've never gotten just a "pop", but I have gotten a lot of "pop-BOOM".

If your Walker requires repairs that you're not comfortable performing yourself there is a black powder gunsmith at Fort Chambers Inc. in Chambersburg Pa. I ran across their web site while searching the internet a while back. I've never used their services, but, it's worth a shot. You may find that your gun isn't as far gone as you think.
