As with my G30 pictures in another thread, I shot a couple of my cheap Wal-Mart bought knives as practice.

Thoughts?

These first two are the same shot, just different crops. One better than the other, compositionally?

That S30V knife is a great deal, and made in the USA. Unfortunately it's also way too small for me and I gave mine away.

Nice pics!

Your top pic has some nice natural backlight but needs some front fill...especially because of the dark knife handle..it just soaks up light.

The extreme closeup has short depth of field. If you wanted everything in focus you can try to get in close and use your camera's macro feature.

Nice pics. I hope you were asking for feedback on the photos and not the knife. Otherwise, sorry for the critique!

I can see your reflection in the marbles.

Shooting the photo through a reflective screen with a hole in it would conceal you and help take care of the front fill.

You had it right, I was wondering about the pictures.

I was experimenting with some new lighting, and I too thought the handles were a bit dark; I kinda' like it like that anyway. I was purposely trying for the short DOF, though. ;)

I didn't think about the reflection until I was processing the pictures. It's not me though... really. :p It's the camera on the tripod. I'll try a screen next time around.

Thanks for the input peoples!

Nice! very good lighting and angles.

the CRKT M16 looks good but is one of the worst knives i've handled.

I am not a big fan of the CRKT M16 but the Spyderco Native is an awesome knife. Just don't try and pry a nail out of piece of wood with it. Busted off a piece of the tip but the knife is still functional.

Great pictures!
What kind of camera did you use? Any special lighting?

Thanks.

I've got a first gen. Canon Digital Rebel (not the XT), and I was using a Tamron 28-75mm lens.

The lighting was just a ghettofied setup I am experimenting with. A couple of cheap work-type flood lights with GE Reveal bulbs. I also used my Sigma EF-500 Super flash on a couple of them... I think.
