walmart stocking stuffers

You know what they also have, saw it yesterday, was a pack of 2 led flashlights and 2 led head mounted lights for under $20. I'm thinking about that set since I've never had a head-mounted light and would like to have one to try.

You'll get more for your money buying Opinel folders and Mora sheath knives and letting people be impressed by using them than the other way 'round with the Chinese equivalent of 420 J and 440A steel used in those SOGs.

Sadly I was in Wally World the other day and saw them. What got my attention was the SOG label, upon closer inspection I put the tomahawk, throwing knives and machete back on the shelf and went about my business.

OTOH, the $20 CRKT Drifters are a darn good deal with 8Cr14MoV blades and G-10 bodies.

Tom, the Buck Bantams with their thin unlined plastic handles are rather flimsy. The CRKT drifters with G10 handles and a metal liner are much sturdier.

Ugaarguy, did not know that my local Wally world has them locked up behind glass so mainly looking at the pattern. Thanks for the heads up.

Not too impressed with the knives but the wife did put one of those $20 SOG Fasthawk Tomahawks under the tree for me.The reviews on them are pretty good and should be a fun thrower. Might pick up a second one just because.

My daughter wanted the SOG throwing knives too. Hope they arent complete junk.

I got one of the sog tomahawks last year and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, not the most high end hawk, but for the price way more than you pay for.

CRKT knives have never impressed me with their edge holding abilities.
They are very tacticool, however. That has to count for something.
Too bad they dropped the folding Razel from the lineup.

uggarguy pointed me to Home Depot deals -

Leatherman Sidekicks at $25 and Wingmans at $20 on sale well below internet prices.

Coast knives for $10.

Peltor muffs at $15 and electronic muffs at $80.

One thing about some of the big box stocking stuffers. Last years Kershaws are one example. The knives were cheaper versions of the original. Where the originals were assisted openers the ones sold by Walmart were not assisted. I'm not saying that all of these specials involve knives with features to support the price point, but it is something to be aware of. Still, great gifts especially for folks who aren't necessarily "knife guys".

Yep, I grabbed one of the Coast knives Home Depot specials, the FX416 frame lock. The scales are plastic rather than aluminum like the package says. Not a big deal since the scales are just texture slabs over the stainless steel frame.

ETA (12/1/14): I got an email earlier today from Coast. They said all the previously aluminum scaled FX41x knives have been switched to nylon scales, and they're just using up all the pre-printed package inserts. They said it was done because there were excessive complaints from folks about the Al scales being too hot or cold, and the black anodizing being scratched. Wood scale FX41x folders are not affected. So, the Home Depot holiday special Coast knife is the same as all the other FX41x series.

Last time I was at Walmart I saw some paracord, that would be nice.
Except that you cant para cord wrap a folder's handle and still have the folder functionality.

My wife saw this and said it's "Stocking stuffers for axe murderers".:D

I have one of the SOG Fasthawks. I like it. I want several other tomahawks, but it's a start.

I looked at the SOG Kukri machete yesterday. Could do without the sawback, and its not a great quality steel. Not bad for the price, but not something I couldn't live without.

I've got a couple other machetes, and even want a kukri, but still set it back on the display.

The reviews of the Sogfari Kukri have not been kind to it. Breakage being the biggest problem.

I am looking for stocking stuffers in the $20-25 range as "gifts" to give to good customers for the holidays. Leathermans sound classy, if I can get a deal on decent ones for that price range. They have name recognition, allthough I wouldn't own one yadayada......

Gord,

Dash out to the Home Depot and gobble up some Wingman and Sidekick models. They're right in your sweet spot for what you want. I ordered a dozen Wingman models online and had them delivered to the house for free. I bought Sidekicks at the local HD since they weren't apparently available for online order.
