I picked up a Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe Sporter in .270 Win today at Walmart on clearance for $543 out the door (normally priced at $750 before tax). The rifle is gorgeous. As far as I can tell, it is a Walmart exclusive in which Weatherby took their Vanguard Sporter model, but included a gloss stock (vice satin) and a gloss blued finish (vice bead blasted matte). I just could not resist when I saw the beautiful rifle and the price. Does anyone else have one?

Up next is picking up a nice Leupold scope, rings, and bases... Recommendations? Also, does Leupold or another respectable brand offer a gloss black scope?

I’ve been tempted to get one at my local WalMart. They are beautiful rifles. They still have .243, .270, .308 in stock. Can’t beat it for the money.

there are plenty of gloss leupolds on ebay if you don't sell them new anymore. I've found that the older model vari xiii's are just as good as the current offerings. They can be found in gloss black fairly easily and buying used will save you a little coin.

One of those? If so good buy (and go get me one :p), they usually run right around a grand here.

Leupold still offers gloss scopes I believe, not sure bout anybody else.

It is a combination of the Deluxe that you hyperlinked and the Sporter version. From what I can tell, it uses the gloss bluing on the metal that the Deluxe uses and uses the same stock that is on the Sporter version, except it is a glossed stock instead of satin. The stock is very similar between the Deluxe and Sporter; however, the Sporter does not have the white line separating the stock and the darker wood on the stock's tip and it does not have the end cap. That is why I think what Walmart is selling is a Walmart Exclusive.

Very interesting, sounds like a really nice variant!

I prefer the Sporter Model to the Deluxe because of the wood finish. I don’t care for super glossy wood. I have a .243 Sporter and like it.

If it were my rifle I’d put a VX-3i 3.5-10x40 or a VX-6hd 2-12x42 on it.

My Vanguard I refer to as a “pawn shop puppy”; I got it for $250 USD out the door in ‘07. It’s a .257wby. Priced factory ammo lately? Explains why it was orphaned.

It’s a matte synthetic. I once could have gotten a Wood stocked .270 and swapped but like the paint job I put on mine.

I love the .257wby. 3,500fps with 100gr, 3,300 with 115-117gr.
It’s just a tad heavy, however. Mostly, I use it to shoot deer out my kitchen window. Nothing better... hits like a .270, shoots as flat as .22/250... shoots blem bullets ($7/100) into bug-holes, using surplus $5/lb powder... what’s not to like?
(But it does have a pronounced preference for Weatherby/Norma brass.)
You did well. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your Vanguard as much as I have mine.

I suggest a VariXIII or VX3 3.5-10x scope. They just sorta “fit” together.
Mine wears an older Nikon Buck Masters 3-9x.

I am no help on your scope quest, but I'm sure you will love your Weatherby. I have a S2 that I love.

.
I found some Weatherby ammo through a distributor that runs $35- $40 retail. It has a 100 gr. Norma Bullet and makes for cheap brass.

Yes, I’ve used it, same brass as Weatherby ammo. Very good bullet and 1/2moa (3-shots) from my rifle. A tad slow, however. Chrono’s just over 3,400fps from my 24”Vanguard.
In fact, the only criticisms of my Vanguard were the original trigger (now has a Timney), and 24” vis 26” barrel of MkV. The Howa action is a bit heavy, as is barrel, but that contributes to accuracy. Very smooth action.

My favorite load is a Hornady 100gr blem (flat base interlock) over Reloader 25. Gets over 3,600fps and 3/4moa. 74.0gr RL25.
Mostly, I use 80.0gr WC860 w/Hornady blem.
Sighted 1”high at 100yds, it’s zero at 200, down ~4” at 300; or +2.5 at 100, zero at 300, down 7” at 400. But, deer seem to just “come in, and give up!”, as my longest shot with it is ~150yds. Go figure!

Use ONLY Norma/Weatherby brass. Federal, Winchester, Remington, and Hornady hold 3-5gr less powder!!!. Lower velocity too...

I don’t shoot it much from fear of burning out the barrel. Will cost more to rebarrel than I paid for the rifle.
