I'm curious what the overall feeling on the Walther CCP is from those who own one. My girlfriend was trying on guns in search of her first, and for a carry gun, and she really liked how it felt in the hand.

Reliability? Accuracy? Recoil? Concealability?

I've done some research and am aware of the features, but I'm reading mixed reviews.

A SA XDs in 9mm is in the running also. Her birthday is next month and I'd like to surprise her, with the caveat of course that if the gun I get her doesn't work for her, she has guilt free trade fodder to find one that does work for her.

The Sig 938 was in the running also, but she is uncomfortable carrying cocked and locked, and is worried she will forget to swipe the safety if she actually needs the gun.

What say you Waltherites?

Its a great "little" gun. I say that because its the same size, roughly, as a Glock 19. But besides that, I definitely feel it's a great gun, way easier shooting gun than the XDS. I bought mine used from a friend who put 500 rounds through it before I bought it, so in that initial "break in" period im not sure if he had any malfunctions or not. But since I bought it I have put close to another 1000 rounds (mix of fmj, jhp, and reloads) through it without a hiccup.

The trigger as it comes new is crap, but it does smooth out a good bit over time. I generally come away with 2"-2.5" groups unsupported at 15 yards. And its every bit as comfortable as the PPQ/VP9/P30. It shoots like a "full size".

I think she'd like it. There's really not much bad about it besides its a PITA to field strip due to the "key", and the trigger till it smooths out. Id say go for it.

There are definitely serious concerns about the reliability of the CCP. It is not made at the ULM plant like the P99/PPQ/PPS but made at the plant where the Umarex air/.22 pistols are made.

People just love the CCP but IMO too many reliability issues being reported for at least myself to consider it in any self defense role.

The Walther PPS however is a solid pistol and the many consider the new M2 model to have a pretty nice grip. I own the original PPS myself and just love it.

See the Walther Forum CCP section and read for yourself.

My wife bought one, it shot very well and was easy to hit with the pistol. The slide is easy to operate, a plus for my wife.

She sold the pistol after returning it for repairs to Walther. The repairs fixed the magazine dropping out during shooting and helped the FTE issues but did not solve them. There were still FTE problems, especially when my shot the pistol. Not really limp wristing, but allowing the pistol to raise in recoil and that apparently affects extraction. FWIW, she has no such issues shooting a Ruger 1911 Commander or SIG p220 in .45 ACP.

Disassembly and assembly were a lot more trouble than other pistols, but the biggest pain for me was the slide catch that prevents using most cleaning rods from the rear.

The reliability issues are some of the disturbing things I've read about the CCP. Others seem to have had great luck.

The biggest problem I think she needs to overcome is HOW she wants to carry. From my knowledge of her, it needs to be a belt holster, or ankle holster set up. The CCP seems a tad big for ankle. Of course so does the XDs.

Mine has been flawless for about 500 rounds and I really like the form factor. At least for me it's the first smaller gun that is comfortable to both carry and shoot.

The xds makes the CCP feel like a die-cast toy gun. Although I have never fired one I was very unimpressed when looking one over, and then I went home to read all the bad reviews. It was very early in the production just as they hit the streets.

And this is the reason I personally wouldn't even consider a CCP. I had my experience with that plant via my purchase of a P22, which will go down in history as the biggest POS I've ever owned (and I'm far from alone in that experience). It actually took me years to get up the nerve to risk my hard-earned dollars on another 'Walther' product. So far my PPS M2 has been awesome (excepting the horrid trigger), but as stated - that comes from a different plant. Walther - aka Umarex - is destroying the brand name by allowing anything that goes bang to come out of that plant.

Thanks for the replies gents. After reading quite a few negative reviews online, I think the CCP is off the list. There are plenty of other guns in that size range that I feel have a better reputation. If she wants one, they aren't that expensive, so she can always pick one up. Right now, we are leaning heavily towards the 3.3' XDs in 9mm. I'm trying to track a rental down. If that's too snappy for her, we'll have to look at bigger guns to absorb the recoil.

She's a chiropractor so she makes her living with her hands. She will not tolerate any abuse of her hands from a gun. That's why she hated the recoil of the 45 xds. If the xds doesn't work out, she can trade it towards something that does.

Like most Umarex-made guns, the quality of the CCP is pretty poor.

The same money will buy you a real Walther PPS, which is a very high-quality firearm that fills the same niche as the CCP and makes that pistol pointless.
