Walther P22 Feeding Issues

I'm getting frustrated with my P22. I've tried several different ammo brands, and haven't experienced 10 trouble free shots in a row...any ideas short of selling it.

Anyone interested in a P22?

Completely degrease/de-oil the gun. Then give it a light pass with a can of remoil spray.

Should work well with any high velocity bulk pack ammo.

Except Remington Thunderbolt. That stuff is just crap.

If you are mechanically inclines you can download a copy of the "P22 bible". Detailed instructions on disassembly, tune up, re-assembly. Mine did not need it, but it was a fun way to spend a couple hours.

My P22 eats Remington Golden Bullets all day long. Won't eat much else though.

The P22 will shoot most rounds once the gun had had a steady diet of 500 rounds or more of high velocity ammo. I recommend CCI Minimags.

You can be cheap with the P22 but you're going to have to spend some $$ on high velocity ammo first.

The P22 is a hit-or-miss proposition these days. Some of them work with darn near anything; others don't seem to want to work at all. But the hotter the round, the more likely you are to have some success. So by all means invest in a box or two of mini-mags and give them a run-through. If they work, there you go. If they don't, consider an alternative. There are plenty of functioning .22s out there these days that will allow you lots of good days at the range.

Walther has made a number of quality firearms through the years; the P22 is not among them.

I checked out the p22 bible, and I want to try some of the mods. Have any of you performed them?

Interesting. I shot one today and while I was talking to the range officer, he stated that his (earlier production) was problematic due to magazine flaw. He got a new one from the mfg. and was successful after that. Contact Walther and see if they still do replacements.

Mine jammed a little at first. Probably needed a little break in period. I'd say clean it, lube it, and try different ammo. I've used CCI minimags and subsonics (suppressed and unsuppressed) and it's worked fine. Cheap junk bulk ammo isn't worth the frustration if you spend more time clearing jams than shooting. At least buy one box of CCI and see if it feeds those ok after you've cleaned it and lubed it before you start trying the mods from the P22 bible.

Early production magazines were problematic and you should check that out on your gun. Updated magazines have slots cut on the sides where the shell base rides near the top of the magazine .

Careful with the mods presented in the bible. It is easy to go to far and the used P22 I purchased had gone through the bible procedures where the owner ruined the hammer by removing too much surface metal.

It took me 6 months to get a hammer for mine. It is running well now and shoots pretty much anything . On a new gun, give it some round count before doing too much fluff & buff. 500 rounds will help break things in. Also make sure you lube the thing .

I have two P22 pistols and have had continual feeding problems with both. I posted a thread here about a year ago and tried all of the recommendations. In the end I sent both in for service.

Both were serviced, but only one was fixed. Magazines and ammo were not the problem because the slide would hang up when it was empty.

I have given up on them and went with a Ruger.

If you are the original owner, send it in. They will pay shipping both ways.

I second the Remington Golden Bullet HP's ($15.97 for 550 at Wally World) I have about 600 rounds thru mine, tried alot of the cheap stuff, excellent luck w/ the Remington Goldens and a close second is the Winchester 333 HP. Not so good luck w/ Federal Bulk or Wildcats.

I just sold my P22 and the guy that bought it told me that they have had less problems with the P22's that were post N (I think) in the SN and had an A on the bottom of the mags. He said that they were less prone to failures.

I had the exact same problem with mine, and after three trips back to Walther it works great now. They said it was the "trigger arm bar". Just FYI

Update

After reading your input, I decided to do a total degrease job, lightly lube it, and try CCI Minimags.

Report: after 100+ rounds of 38 grain HP (3 stores didn't have round nose) It cycled 100% of rounds, and had one failure to fire, but fired on 2nd DA attempt.

There is still a hang-up at the halfway point of the action. It will hang up loaded, empty, cocked, and w/o the magazine.

I was much happier with the cycling performance, but I am forever tainted on the gun.

How many rounds are through it? I would think 500+ would take care of any minor fitting issues and after that you may need to break out the P22 bible.
Glad to hear it's running better. They seem to need a little breaking in.

It's' well over 500. I started with 50 CCI Stingers as recommended, then Minimags, and then cheap bulk, which brought out the feeding issues.
