I went to my favorite neighborhood gun store recently and checked out a new Walther P22 with the 3.5" bbl.

In a word: CUTE!

Are there any who have one - how does it perform?

Walther P22

Hi Trisha,

I picked one of these up about 6 months ago and I love it. Everyone wants to shoot it when we go to the range.

From a bench rest, it groups at abot 1" from 10 yards, perhaps somewhat less. It loves Remington clad bulets from Walmart. It will not feed lead, unclad bullets.

My 5'4 wife, my 6'5" son and I all use the same grip and all find it comfortable to shoot. It's both double and single action, which I like. The magazines have a button follower so it's easy to load.

The only two problems to date:

1. A roill pin near the safety backs out after 100 rounds. Good news, S&W fixed it and had it back to me in a week, with an extra magazine!

2. It's now my wife's pistol.

Good shooting,

Scarface

-I almost bought one, and may still yet--but even so, the coolest thing about the P22 is the way it looks--totally "tactical". It doesn't work all that well however, and owners are seeing serious slide and rail wear after only about 5000 shots--so keep it lubed well there. Most of the complaints you find online date from 2002, but we still note that the slide is zinc and the rails that the slide rides on (embedded in the polymer grip) are not replaceable, as one contains the serial number. Overall, it is a good-looking but cheaply-built gun.

Well, the P-22 is not a SW 41 but it IS a good little gun, fun to shoot, mimics a combat handgun for training purposes, feels good in the hand, and is a great plinker. It's gotten a bit of a bad rap mostly because of a magazine problem back over a year ago. Since then S&W (Walther's distributer here) has fixed the mags and they offer excellent customer service...really, the best. The P-22 isn't perfect: it usually has a heavy double action trigger, the barrel nut on the muzzle will come loose until you tighten it once while the barrel is hot. Mine is one of the first ones on the US market and I've never had no problems except for the barrel nut and my double action trigger is heavy. I've noticed on newer guns that the trigger pull seemed smoother and not as heavy. Since you are a girl and think the gun is "cute" :D , you should also know that it comes in different color flavors! I've seen it with a gray frame and with a blue frame. My dealer just got one in with a standard black frame but with a satin nickeled slide (wants $360 for it though!).

I have the 3.4" barrel version and have been utterly pleased with its performance and accuracy. I bought it used, so can't say how many rounds have been thru it, but the (Wal-Mart) Federal bulk-packs run just fine in it.
Its a good plinker, and informal target gun, but will it out-shoot my Browning BuckMark Target? Of course not, but it doesn't pretend it can.
What it can do is be alot more comfortable to carry around! :D

I bought mine used, but it has been reliable enough that I recently made arrangements to buy a second.

The first, lately loaded with CCI Velocitor ammo, accompanies me while mowing my place, and this pistol/ammo combo has dispatched several critters that desperately needed it, including one skunk, quite a few turtles, and two snakes!

Good little guns, IMO.

Well Trish,

The P22 is the ONLY auto my wife owns.
Her ONLY departure from revolvers. It's very accurate and has not had a single malfunction. There's some take-up in the trigger, but you get used to that fast. Smooth as glass. I love it. Great fun! May have to pick one up for myself. Her's "feels" like it like's truncated bullets best. Pretty "starburst" with those in a darkened range. You'll LOVE it! :)

I've really enjoyed mine the past year. Every time I take people out or teach someone how to shoot, they seem to try several guns and almost all come to enjoy the P22 the most. Had some feeding problems, throated the feed ramp and solved that problem... after awhile, the safety tends to turn itself on - I deepened the detent hole and that stopped.

I've heard that the slide/frame wear quickly... but it has S&W's lifetime warranty so it's really more their problem than mine.

The different-colored frames were a "special edition" that comes with both barrel lengths included. The regular guns are black-only.

-I was looking at a target model. I had planned one, maybe two modifications:
1) cut real compensator ports in the barrel (with a Dremel tool and cutoff wheel), to line up with the "compensator" slots, and-
2) maybe drill a hole and cut a notch in the underside of the front of the barrel, to use a roll pin to trap the compensator on. A lot of people are seeing them scoot off.

I like mine. It's a great gun for the $199 I paid.

It's nice and small, and pretty accurate for a 3" barrel.

I only wish I could have a supressor for it. That would be uber cool.

i got a p22 for my first pistol. Being a newbie i got it because it was the coolest 22 i ever saw. it performs well, but is fussy with ammo. use the remington gold colored (green label) i found that it was the only ammo that cycled smoothly. got it used for $180. good plinker. the early ones had problems with the magazines, so get a new one. The whole setup new with the 3 AND 5" barrell is about $325 or so. have fun
