thinking about buying one of these for plinking....how well do they hold up? i know theyre cheap, so im not sure what to expect

just looking at the short barrel model, hear too many bad things about the extended barrel

would it be unreasonable to expect this gun to hold up for 30k rounds or so? im meticulous about cleaning and maintenance...i take care of my things

You are kidding right? Ofcourse it will hold up. I have one and its loads of fun. Only thing I will say is mine likes CCI Minimags (High Velocity) and doesn't work too well with CCI Standard stuff.

Some of them do crack, but they should be covered under warranty. They won't reach that mark until 5-6k rounds so pick one up and plink away. They are fun to shoot. They are also made by Umarex which primarily makes cheap plastic airsoft and bb guns. I'm not trying to bash them, they shoot very well and tons of them hold up just fine.

The reason for cracking is that the slide is made of Zinc, and is cast which does not make it very strong. Cleaning it all the time will not do anything for the life of the pistol save for when it starts jamming due to being too dirty. Recoil springs and buffers are the only thing that will need to be changed if the pistol starts to hang up a lot.

Mine began falling apart after a few thousand rounds. google up the "P22 Bible" for a PDF file on amateur gunsmithing tricks to keep them running.

As far as I'm concerned, you'd be far better off spending an extra $100 for a Ruger or Browning that will be far more accurate and last far longer.

I have the 3.42" barrel version. I think the cracking problem was with the longer barrel version, the 3.42" barrel version doesn't have that problem from what I've read.

it was between this and the sig mosquito

seems the p22 and mosquito are my only two options i can see, besides a cz75 kadet - but at twice the cost, im not too keen on that one lol

I had miserable luck with my Mosquito- and I'm a Sig guy! My P22 is a good gun, but my Buckmark and my Ruger are better guns.

My first .22. It was okay but I sold it and here are some bad points:

- Rear sight with a single screw was loose right out of the box. Google and you will find many more with the issue.
- No other rear sight for it
- Slide metal started to wear after a couple thousand rounds
- Front sight sometimes falls off or knocks off easily
- Little tricky getting the slide back in place after field stripping

Now for the same or even less money I bought my S&W .22A-1 after selling it. It's a tack driver with a good adjustable rear sight and HiViz front. Come standard with three mags (I'm told the P22 now ships with just one). Easy take-down, bull barrel option in 5.5". It's extremely extremely accurate and I have put thousands through it without a single hiccup. I still have the original shock buffer in to this day! No signs of wear anywhere period. It's the one pistol I have that I would never part with!
