I've been eyeing a P5 at a local dealer for a few weeks now. I'm a fan of 9mm autos and already own a CZ 75 and a Browning Hipower. When I handled the Walther, it was one of those "ahhhh" moments. It felt so natural in my hand. I wanted to get some feedback from P5 owners to help me decide whether or not to buy. About the only downside that I can see is the price and mag capacity being single stack: It's priced at $875 , but the gun is virtually perfect (possibly unfired) and comes with an extra mag and all of the original paperwork and box. I think people are overlooking it because of the price and the fact that the display cases are chock full of lower priced hicap autos. As I said, information from owners would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas to all of the forum members!

Had one years ago it seemed to be well machined but mine would not feed most 9mm hollow points very well. Had no use for a 9mm that wasn't reliable with most hollow point so down the road it went. That price seems high to me. If you want a single stack 9mm HK P7, HK P7 M8, or even a S&W 3913 would be a much better choice mostly because they well gobble up hollow points.

i would get it just to pair my P6 (Sig) and P7 (H&K) from the mid-70's german police trials

if you like the look and feel of it, but balk at the price, you might look around of a LE surplus model...that's where most of the P6 and P7 currently on the market are from

You couldn't make a better choice, IMO. The P5 might well be the ultimate Walther, the top of the line, the finest extension of the original P.38. I own three of the full-sized models and a P5C; just added one to the collection and am giving one to my son for Christmas -- can't think of a better present. It's my all-time favorite range gun; I've put hundreds upon hundreds of round through the P5 and have never experienced a hitch or hiccup. If I were required to get rid of all of my handguns save one, it would be a P5, without question. But that's just me. :)

As a word of caution, if you shop around and are patient, you can often find P5s in top-notch condition in the $600 range.

P5

Merry Christmas, I have a P5, P6,P7 and a P7M8 in my modest German Trial pisto collectionand have found them all to be excellent firearms. The Walther P5 is a great shooter and unlike other's experiences with the beautiful little pistol.... mine has yet to demoninstrate any problems with different ammo including hollow points.:) Of the four pistols I shoot the HK's better by far. But they all have been extremely reliable, accurate and I carry them often during the winter months.
As far as the $875 price tag go's....I'd try and work him down to $750 cash if you can work it....sometimes seeing the green rolling out of your wallet helps especially with a "that's all I have". If that doesn't work ...look elsewhere.

I had one, pretty nice pistol.
I sold it when I was offered way more than I paid for it.
I have a P7 now and like it as well as the Walther.

It's just money. In six months you won't even remember that if you had looked longer and harder you might have save a hundred. In the meantime, you will have something that you really wanted. It is my second favorite Walther pistol.

This P5 just dropped in my lap recently for $600. Always liked to have one, but never actively looking for it, until I spotted one at my FFL while there picking up another transfer buy.:)

Goahead and get it. I have one (1985 mftr / Interarms Import)and absolutely love it. I've never had a malfunction w/ hollow point ammo. It's a classic! My favorite Walther...100% reliable and shoots like a Gold Cup Match....I routinely carry it off duty.

FWIW:

I'm a pretty big Walther fan, (PP/P1/P5/P99c/AS, P99/AS) and I think the P5 is an awesome pistol.

I didn't keep mine for very long because I have smaller hands, and it was just a bit too large for any practical use.

But the one I had was amazingly accurate, always reliable, and a pleasure to shoot.

I'd still like to find a compact P5, but even if I did my budget just wouldn't let me do more that fondle it. :barf:

Quality pistol.... Getcha' one.

Best Wishes,

jesse
