What's the difference between these two versions? The P99 comes in the titanium slide but the QA only in black and greeen. How do they compare and which is the better version? Are they both German made?

The regular P99 is a "traditional double action" (Or as close as you can get with a striker fired action.) It has decocking for the first shot DA followed by SA firing, kind of like your Berettas. If you don't decock, you will have the SA pull at the first shot but with a long trigger travel. The "anti-stress" trigger. Woo, woo.

The 99QA is a form of DAO with short trigger travel, a direct competitor to Glock.

They also make a DAO with long DA pull.

Trigger actions are graphed at

The "titanium" variant is a surface finish, the slide is steel with the same Tenifer hardening as Glock. I don't know if it is mar resistant, the dull white finish makes it look like a cap gun.

All are out of Germany, marketed by Smith & Wesson, who has a separate lineup with Walther receiver (Out of a different mold with S&W styling ideas and trademark.) under a S&W made slide and barrel.

Both are German-made. Both share the same ergonomics. They differ only in their trigger, in terms of its inner workings. The standard P99 is a traditional SA/DA auto that is striker-fired. Its SA trigger weight is very light, it becomes very smooth after about 500 rounds, and its reset is short and crisp. Its DA trigger weight is on par with other traditional SA/DA autos. The P99 QA has the same trigger weight for all shots, much like a Glock. Its trigger reset is not nearly as short as the standard P99.

I prefer the standard P99 over the P99 QA.

The current offering has the P99 available in three color variations: all-black, Military (olive drab frame and black slide), and Titanium Coated (black frame and silver slide). The current P99 QA is available in only all-black.

The forthcoming redesigned P99 will have three variations, one of which has color variations. The P99 AS (Anti Stress) has the same trigger as the standard P99, and is only in all-black. The P99 DAO (Double Action Only) has the same trigger as the P990. The P99 QA keeps the same name, and will be available in all-black and Titanium Coated (black frame and silver slide). Interestingly, there seems to be more emphasis on the P99 QA this time around, being available in more colors. I hope that they reintroduce the Military variation with olive drab frame and black slide. See: http://www.carl-walther.de/englisch/defense/defense-36.html
