All,

Is it just me, or do things like this happen to anyone else. I traded a friend a Beretta 92M that is a great gun and I shot well, but I have started to use my HK USPC 45 more and more as I have gotten more accustomed to it. Well, in return for the 92m, I got a Walther P99, a gun I have always wanted to have and shoot. So I grab the shooting box, hit WW for some extra 9mm and head to the range.

The p99 is a titanium model with just a little holster wear around the ejection port. This is the traditional DA/SA model, which at first glance is a little wacky, but upon application is fantastic.

I had the WW white box 9mm, 50rds S&B 115, 50rds Atlanta Ammo 124g. I also brought the HK to shoot with some GA Ammo factory reloads.

The HK shot as it always does, a 5" group at 15 yrds, a stray or two per mag. Some great shots, others not so great. I cant get a feel for the trigger, and my grip is just to high I think. Plus a nasty push as I brace for recoil. I dont know why ... aggravating....

So I take out the P99, clean it up a little (not that it needed much Recon) and start popping away. The trigger works like this ... after chambering the first round, the trigger is in SA mode, very short and crisp. You can decock the weapon on top of the slide (unusual arrangement) and the gun is now in DA mode with pull almost as long as a CZ100, but not as heavy as the HK's DA pull by far. Some stacking at the end is apparent, but not bad. BUT .. if you want to, after the gun has been decocked and is in DA mode, you can slightly pull the trigger back and set the trigger into a third mode which I called Short DA. This is actually a very comfortable manuever, as the trigger sets nowhere near the break point of the DA mode and shortens the pull considerably. Perfect for CCW.

Accuracy was great... my natural high handhold worked well with the gun and brought the muzzle back to target immediatley. Double taps were amazingly fast, as fast a my favorite double tap gun, Steyr M9. I was shooting 2-3" groups offhand at 15 yrds in with the third mag.

All in all, I shot 200 rds, smiling the entire time. Not one FTF, I had a FTE completely with an Atlanta Ammo case, but it was about the dirtiest, oldest brass I have ever seen, so I think it was the reload fault. I need to stop buying that junk. I do need a good source for affordable 16 rds mags???

Anybody want to buy an HK USPC .45? There is a really nice one for sale in the Classified: Handguns section.

I have a SW99, and I don't think that I'd stage the trigger while CCWing. IIRC the Walther anti-stress trigger is just that, it was designed so that police and the military wouldn't cook off a round before they mean to. When people drew their weapon they would put the finger on the trigger and squeeze. The DA staging are was meant as a catching point if they did not intend to fire. By stagging your trigger there you are defeating that built in stress protector. Granted, the trigger is still DA....but just practice with the long DA trigger pull and your first shot while drawing will be fine and you'll have the extra safety element.

Other than that...a great weapon system!

Glad you had a good time with the P99. I told you it was a good shooter. I haven't had time to shoot the 92SB Compact -Type M- yet but looking forward to it.

I'm glad you like yours. I really like mine. Not least of all the grip, which looks and feels like the shank of a Komodo dragon leg. A gimmick, maybe; but one I find inspiring in ways for which I lack the proper description.

You can get new highcaps for your P99 here: http://www.carlwalther.com (Earl's Repair Service). Not what most would consider affordable. For that you'll need to look elsewhere.

I love my P99 in .40 and really want to try out a 9mm version now. The recoil is very managable in the .40 version, so the 9mm must be rock solid.

Love the controls... different options... and the SA trigger is a dream (short, crisp, super short/fast reset).

Everyone should have one of these... get one before the messed up new design comes out this year.

The P99 has been redesigned. See: http://www.carl-walther.de/englisch/defense/defense-36.html

The slide has different serrations, the frame now has a more usable accessory rail (but will not accommodate the M3 and similar lights, but insead must use the M5 light), and doesn't appear to be available with an olive drab frame. All three trigger types will still be available: DAO, AS (SA/DA), and QA.

Anyway, I took one of my P99s to the range earlier this week, and was again impressed by its performance: 100% reliable, accurate, and a superb trigger.

I changed the backstrap from the Medium (default) to the Small, and I like it much more now. If you have a correct-sized punch (5/32"), changing backstraps requires only hand pressure to get the roll pin out.

Avert your eyes from the horror...

Actually, many seem to like the new look, but it seems very silly. It's like Walther is trying to make the P99 into the SW99... which is weird to me. I'd prefer they left it will enough alone. Oh well...

Here's a bigger one...

Big fat slide serrations... why ? The current ones work great.

Rounded trigger guard... it's been done before... why change it ?

Lunde, have you noticed they list the capacity as one less for both calibers (15 & 11) ?? Very bizarre....

And the OD green frame seems rather popular.... so weird they're dropping it.

Seems like the Walther boys are whacky on the junk...

___________

Quick aside, have you noticed any wear on the bottom of your P99 barrels ? My P99 .40 is showing some after 150 rounds...

Here are some bad pics

About the reduced capacities, it may be related to complaints from shooters who are unable to load up to the 16+1 (or 12+1) capacities. Reducing the "advertised" capacity by one sort of solves this.

When the new-style P99s were on display at the SHOT Show, some had the olive drab frame, so I am sort of surprised that they are not shown in the offerings. Hopefully they come at a later date. There's nothing wrong with an all-black pistol, though.

Interestingly, all of the P99 Compacts were all-black.

About the trigger guard shape, it is related to attaching the M5 light, but also having enough space to accommodate use with gloves. It is the latter that is the reason why the M3 (and similar lights) won't attach. The M3 and M5 differ only in the position of the locking bar. In the case of the M5, it is about a quarter-inch further to the rear. There simply wasn't enough space on the dust cover, between the front of the trigger guard and the muzzle, to accommodate the locking bar groove for the M3.

Although I plan to buy one of the new-style P99s, the P99 AS in 9mm, along with one or two P99 Compacts also in 9mm, I like my P99s as-is.

Anybody handled the P22 as well? I handled one at a gun show and loved how it felt. Was curious if the big bro felt as nice in the hand?

I want a P99 compact not necessarily a subcompact, but I want one in .45. I don't care if it's GAP or ACP, I just want a big fat round bullet hole.

I haven't heard/seen anything about the Germans doing anything in .45 for the P99 series... you'll either have to get a SW99 (ewww....) or better yet go for a .40S&W hole.

What's 50 thousandths amongst friends anyway ? Get the JHPs and the hole will get plenty big enough.

It's not short DA... it's short SA. The DA pull is always the full length.

You can pull the trigger back to the shorter pull length when it's in SA (i.e. the striker is already cocked)

Or maybe I don't get what you're talking about...

The three modes are: DA, SA, and trigger-forward SA. The latter is what you have when you've decocked it with a round in the chamber, and then pulled the slide back to pre-cock the striker.

I'm going through a phase right now of trying to decide what to buy next: the Glock 17, Sig 220 in nitron, or the Walther p99 in titanium (which I've wanted for a while). So far, the recommendation on other boards is the 220 but I can only afford used and the Walther has strong appeal. :)

Ok ...

I was doing it wrong and breaking one of the four rules ....

You all are right, seeting the trigger into long-SA (what I incorrectly termed short-DA) is best done with a short pull on the slide, with a round chambered.

See .. this is why I love and am addicted to THR. You get great information, insights and corrections that keep you safe and happy.

Mastrogiacomo, you and I talked about the Beretta 92M I just traded away .. I am sorry yet glad to say that I do not regret that trade at all. The P99 is what I was looking for, it is nicer and more accurate in my hands then a G19, and more user friendly then many other 9mms I have tried, except a hipower ...

Well I love my Beretta and I love my Glock but I've had my eye on the Walther for a long while and would dearly love to put this in my collection, which I can afford to do so new...:)

I think this will be my next gun along with a Sig Pro in a 9mm later. I'll wait on the 220 when I can afford a good used.
