Anybody own one of these or tried one out? What's your overall impression of the P99 for a 9mm CCW pistol?

Do you ever get used to the unique mag release location?

I was looking at Glock, but I actually prefer the feel & location of the slide stop lever on the P99, plus the grip feels better.

I understand the finish is the same as Glock's tennifer finish?

I'd like to hear the pros & cons of the P99C AS, or P99's in general. When I add up the things I'm looking for in a CCW, the P99C seems to fit the bill.

Input appreciated. :)

I like mine alot. You've covered the pros. Cons...you need to be sure your holster maker has a form for the p99 compact or the 2004 and later fullsize p99, but thats about it.

Higher bore axis than the Glock,so the gun shoots more "top heavy".(No flames intended.)The AS trigger is great if you are used to conventional DA/SA trigger.Indestructible,also.A great choice,and the Compact is such a surprise-accuracy wise.

I carried a gLock 26 for 8 years - had it because of the tough finish - basically rust proof. Never shot it that well, though. Last Nov, I got a compact Walther P99 and got rid of the Glock. I am much happier.

Had the slide hard chromed so it is holster wear proof :)

Leather holsters for the full size P99 will work for the compact.

So the P99C will have more muzzle flip than a Glock 26, but in 9mm it shouldn't be any big deal, right?

Is the P99 easy to take down for cleaning?

Companies like High Noon and Kramer don't list the P99C, so it's good to know standard P99 stuff will work. I guess in the case of a Yaqui, you'd just have less barrel sticking out. With an OWB belt slide, you'd just have extra leather at the bottom.

So, why isn't the P99C more popular? Is it because it's more expensive than a Glock or XD? :confused:

The P99 has the easiest takedown of any pistol I own. You push down the little square on the slide of the frame and pull the slide off. The trigger reset is also extremely short which I love.

I think glocks are cheaper, have more brand recognition, more lazer grips with throwing star shooter accessories, and I think the glock action type trigger is more popular right now. Plus they're kind of hard to find, and hard to find a dealer that knows the difference between the trigger types which for your future reference:
DAO = double action only
QA = quick action, like a glock action
AS = anti-stress = traditional double action

Trigger

AS = anti-stress = traditional double action

These are popping up now, so I should be able to find one. The AS trigger sounds pretty unique. Longer travel 1st shot, with a Glock-like quick reset.

Are AS triggers good out of the box, or do Walthers need to 'break in'? I remember some old threads complaining about Walthers having crappy triggers, not sure it was the AS though.

I have both a P99 AS and a P99C AS, both in 9mm. I love them both. The Compact is my carry pistol. I use a Comp-Tac Undercover Pro IWB holster and I nearly forget that I'm wearing it. I don't find the muzzle flip any problem, although it was a noticeable difference for my wife (which is why I get to carry it now!).

Both my Walthers have been completely reliable. They are easy to clean (as noted above) and hold up fine. I was lucky and picked up my P99C from CDNN while they still had them for $429 -- best money I've spent in a while!

The gun works out of the box, but the trigger gets smoother after about 500 rounds.

That is a steal! I'm looking at paying about $100 more than that. Oh well that's the breaks...

I think I'll order one. :D

P99 is one of the best "total package" CCW I have ever owned. I have the full-size QA in .40. The P99c would be a great choice too. Excellent features - great grip feel, great size/weight, perfect reliablility, unobtrusive decocker, great trigger, good accuracy, etc. etc. - all at a reasonable price.
