I have never had a bolt action rifle before, can you recommend a new .308 maybe smaller bolt action with 20" barrel and nice iron sights? What is the max. mag capacity?

I would use the gun mostly for target, maybe hunting someday.

Well, there's this -

Hawkeye International

Not a lot available with iron sights. Iron sights plus short barrels, and there really isn't much. This has a magazine capacity of 4 (internal box magazine), and has an 18-1/2" barrel and iron sights. You can get a peep sight that fits on one of the scope ring cutouts, and it might work with the factory front sight, or it might require a slightly higher front sight blade.

This isn't a "serious" target rifle, but it doesn't mean it won't punch paper. Much better as a hunting rifle, especially after you put a scope on it...

I think I saw a howa rifle like that in 308 but pretty sure it was a 22'' barrel. you could look at a harrington richards or NEF single shot that's what my 308 is and coult take your rifle to a local gunsmith and have sights put on it. you could also get a savage 12 and do the same with sights if you really want to. if your looking fo something smaller than a 308 look into a 243 or 22 250

No iron sights, but the Remington 700 SPS Tactical is a very nice rifle. They have 20" heavy barrels and with my handload's, will shoot .5-.75" groups at 100 yards all day long.

New + Iron sights are going going to be a hard combo to find nowadays.

As Decjard said, you might look at a CZ 550 FS, but while I've read only good things about CZs, a mannlicher stocked rifle might not be ideal as a target rifle per se. Though I'd never turn my nose up at one, if ya know what I mean.

If you can go with a used model, look at older Win 70s, Rem 700s, Huskys, etc. Wasn't too long ago Remington had iron sights on some of their youth models IIRC. Change out the stock for a longer LOP... voila!

the savage scout meets ALL your criteria for much less money than the steyr

Why a 20" barrel? Not so good for serious target shooting and reduces the effective range of the round when hunting, if you need one that Steyr above or the CZ 550 FS are both really nice and you can get the CZ in 6.5x55 Swedish.

lopezni At most anything generally concidered a normal hunting range a 308 class cartridge from a 20" bbl retains more then enough horsepower to kill all but the meanest north American critters. The benefit to this is with a 20" bbl you really have a handy package to carry, swing and point in the field

I would look at the cz , the savage, and see if Mossberg's Superbantam, is done in 308. Otherwise, there is really only one short bbl ' d rifle, in large cals, only one, that was good, and accurate, and worth it. You can still get them, but you will pay a lot for them. But they are still the best, lightest, most handiest, and they were made by Remington. So if you want something new and short, the remmy model 7 is pretty much the king, and has been for a while now.
But if you can find one of these, say , for under 600, and..." you have the means, then I highly suggest you pick up one!" An homage to Ferris Bueller

and one with the correct full vent rib, large step up rear site,
and massive sharkfin front site.

Once you have handled one of these, you will realize, there is NOTHING , like
these being built today... nothing.
