Hi all,

I've decided I want a new folding knife. I'm hoping for something I can carry for self-defense, or any other random purpose.

I already own a Cold Steel 4" clip point Voyager, and I like it a lot. Only problem I have with it is that I can see parts of the blade that have worn away after I whittled some wood with it for a few minutes. (Is this normal?)

I was thinking of just buying a 3" Voyager, as that will probably be better for both carrying and for actually fitting my hand (my 4" Voyager leaves about 1" of handle extending past the end of my hand when I hold it). Is this a good idea? If so, clip point or tanto point? Serrated or plain?

Or, are there any other good knives I've overlooked? I don't know much about knives, much less which brands are known for quality products.

The reason I decided on Cold Steel was because I think their idea of showing the actual product in action under extreme abuse was awesome. I've never seen another company do that.

Also, how do I sharpen a knife?

Go for Benchmade! they're one of the best high-quality knife makers out there that do not charge a fortune. try www.newgrahamknives.com for better-than-MSRP Benchmades [BM's MSRP's are always very high, higher than you'll ever see at a BM retailer. i believe that it's to promote the business of thier retailers]

how to sharpen? boy, that answer can take up volumes. go join www.knifeforums.com and ask or search there. you'll find what you need and more.

Oh, and Benchmade's Axis Lock is a FANTASTIC piece of engineering. you'd love it. simple, strong, robust, easy to use and clean....

For sharpening see the sticky at the top of this forum.

For an easy system get any of the "V" rod systems like the Spyderco, Lansky or Gatco.

Thanks. :)

Generally, do I want a serrated edge, or a plain edge? And what type of blade (clip point or tanto) should I look for?

Can you post a link the to Axis knife? I can't find it. I searched for it and didn't see it. :(

Edit: What knife is in this photo? http://www.knifeforums.com/uploads/1153705641-edc_6_15.JPG I found it in a thread over at knifeforums.com, and I think it looks really cool.

Edit: What about this? http://www.newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=3931 I've seen a lot of people say they carry it, so I'm assuming it's good. :p

I've narrowed it down to the Benchmade 551 Griptillian or another Cold Steel Voyager, but a medium (3" blade) this time. Thoughts?

If I go with the Voyager, should I get a clip point or tanto point? Combo edge or plain?
