Looking for a new toy. Won't hunt with it - just a "fun" range gun.

Which one:

S&W500
S&W460

Well, the 460 will also shoot .454 Casull, "Ruger-only" .45 Colt, regular .45 Colt, black powder .45 Colt (Now that's something I want to see. I wonder if someone's tried to load up a .460 S&W case with black powder :D) and even .45 S&W Schofield, if you were so inclined.

I'd think the 460 as well. Gotta ask though...is this an honest shooter or just something to use as bragging purposes and as an attention getter? Seen a LOT of people buy these X-frames just for that reason. (pretty sad) These are the guns you see a short time later when the buyer realizes ammo is costly and it recoils.

Either would be great, but if you've already gotten setup for reloading .45's, the .460 is the ticket.

I have to agree, the .460 Magnum would be a better choice than the .500 Magnum because of the ability to shoot 4 different rounds from it like said above.

From a ballistic standpoint 460 is the way to go..Compared to the energy @ a given distance, and velocity the 460 outshines the 500. That is why you see a lot of slightly used 500's for sale..I would venture that most of those shooters now have 460's...

Unless you buy them both, it's a question that only you can answer. Which one best fits your hand and eye? Or, which one do you really want? But it sounds like you really do want them both, so the real question you want to answer is this: Which one should I get first?

So ... which one is it?

The .460 is hands down the more practical choice.

The .500 makes more of a 'cool/badass' statement.... but not MUCH more of one.

I do like those performance center ones with the rails, but it does make me wonder how many scopes, lights, or lasers are on the market that can actually withstand that kind of recoil over time?

If you like a BIG flash/bang the 460 is the ticket. I was reminded of that this past weekend when I switched from 335 gr hand loads to 200gr Hornady factory loads. The muzzle flash got my attention like NOW.

The 460 can be more economical to shoot (you have more options), especially if you roll your own. 500 factory ammo is ridiculously $$$. That doesn't mean that I don't want a 500. I got the 460 first and I don't regret it. Also, recoil is very tolerable - I have never had more that a very slight stinging in the palm and that goes away after the first shot. Bought shooting gloves but never use them anymore - don't need them.

"Want" a new toy

"Want" versus "Need". Honesty is refreshing.

Got to add my vote to the 460 crowd. What ever are you going to do with a 500? Oh yeah, I forget. You might just want it. :neener:

Have fun picking out the new toy!
