First of all I'm not too knowledgeable about hand guns. I'm looking to buy a new S&W .357 with 6" barrel. 686,586 ect? What types are they? Whats the difference? And how much should I pay? Is there a price list somewhere? I'm basically going to use it for home protection and the range. I'm tired of tripping over my 12ga. in the bedroom and I can't use a hand gun to hunt in anti-gun Illinois. Thanks

A good way to do this kind of survey--including gathering price information--is to go to one of the internet auction sites, like gunbroker.com. Go to the subsection of revolvers, under pistols, and search for 357. There you'll find scads of examples--the best of which you probably named right out of the gate. A 6 or 7 shot 686 is probably about the best first revolver anyone could buy. The other standard recommendation in your situation is the Ruger GP100, which would probably serve just as well for your purposes.
