Want to Build a 25-06 Heavy Barrel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I cant find a heavy barrel 25-06 from any of the companies on the market w/o going custom and spending over a thousand bucks. So I came up with the idea that I would buy a cheap used savage with like a 30-06 or 270 action. This way I could just change the bbl . Possibly the stock as well just for personal reasons. If I could get the gun for around a couple of hundred I wouldnt think a nice custom heavy barrel would cost more than a couple hundred.

Does this sound doable as far as the budget goes?

Also what other bolt faces would work for the 25-06?

Here is a cheap gun for a donor:

Would this one be a candidate?

Your looking for a standard bolt face on a long action; 06, 270, 280, or .25-06. A barrel will cost you from around 150 on up to as much as you want to spend. Ive had good luck with ER shaw tubes, but im not asking for 1/2moa accuracy (tho my 6x47 is capable). Shilens will start you around 250 and go up from there, others are more expensive. I cant see the 2nd link, if its a 7mm magnum no, you could do a .257wby and beat out the fastest .25-06 by a couple hundred FPS with a long tube.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=257404390 youd need a bolt, which the seller says he has.

Loonwulf that goober already sold the trigger and bolt. So now that is putting up around the cost of a new gun to build off of that receiver. I think I can get a stainless gun for under $300.00 with the accutrigger.

Bruno2,Savage does make a heavy barreled 25/06,but it is a matte blued model-FP 110.

The cheapest route for building one would be a Stevens 200 rifle for the action(it's just a non-accutrigger savage),then buy a barrel( a Shilen Stainless Select Match will run about $340),buy a Rifle Basix trigger if you want a better trigger-$95-160 depending on which one you want. Then put it in whatever stock you want.
You will also need an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench, and some go-no go gauges.

If you can get a stainless gun under 300 go for it, pop the barrel off sell that for 20-50 bucks, stock for another 20 or so. You could also try contacting savages custom shop, see if they would build you what you want.

They told me a couple yrs ago they werent offering it anymore.

I did , they want $850.00 to do it. I was thinking I could do better building one. Maybe a little less money and a little more gun. I dont know though I will just have to do the research.

First I suppose I need to finish the Bronco off road truck, the two custom match 10/22's and the AR varminter before I get into this project. Oh yeah the F250 is really close to being done as well.:uhoh:

LOL, yeah projects are great arnt they? till they pile up LOL. I just finished some work on my toyota so now im looking for other stuff to do.

I had a 2005 (approximately) vintage 110 FP 25-06 that would group well

If I could find another that would be the route I would go.

Bruno, if you can't find a barrel, you aren't looking in the right places. Krieger lists a barrel in .257 and their inventory list is showing a few heavies in stock ready to ship. The barrels that I've ordered from them went for around $300 and they are some of the best.

I also just need to ask. I know that there are a lot of Savage fans, so, how heavy a barrel can you put on a Savage? Isn't the diameter of the barrel limited by what can pass through the barrel nut, usually?

The barrel nut attaches where the barrel is full contour, so you can use a strait bull barrel. IMHO, you’re probably better off with a varmint contour (unless you’re just carrying it from your truck to a bench).

If you want to do it yourself, get a fully chambered, threaded ‘drop in’ barrel. Northland Shooter Supplies can likely fix you up with a barrel. Keep in mind that going with a heavier barrel will require a different stock.

Find out the bolt spacing prior to buying a donor rifle/action. I disassembled a 110 that I had had for years and when I started ordering parts, I realized I had an odd spacing. My budget re-build is now off to a smith for custom stock and bottom metal. I’ll probably see it again in 5 months and $1000 later.

What does "full contour" mean? I'm asking the question because guys that I know who shoot F Class and T/R usually get rid of the barrel nut and have their barrels fitted Remington fashion. They told me that they did it that way so that they can get the large contour barrels on their rifles, like the Krieger MTU and Heavy Varmint.

I'm unclear on what you mean by "straight bull" as well. The straight bulls that I've seen were all 1.25" in diameter. Do you mean that a Savage barrel nut will fit over this?

Sorry.
Savage Varmint 1.060" contoured to .800" @ 26"
Savage Bull Barrel 1.060" contoured to 1.00" @ 26" (while not strait, this is what I was calling strait; 0.06" reduction in 26").

1.25" will not fit a standard savage action, I don't know if it will fit the new large ring actions.

McGowen will build a barrel to your specs and put it on for ~$300 (stainless). My buddy paid a tick over $300 for his last year. Pick you barrel, chamber, contour, crown, finish, send them your action (barreled or not) and get it back with your barrel on it.

FWIW, $850 from the Savage custom shop is not a bad deal at all, considering that you'll pay $650 for a Model 116, and the barrel didn't exactly match the action... It would cost a few bucks more to have McGowen bead blast the action make it match, but it could be done. Frankly, though, I'd pay the extra money... just becuase I know how good my McGowen barrel shoots and how easy it is to clean.

The added advantage of custom ordering your barrel (from Savage or someone else) is that you can choose the barrel length. .25-06 can be vary much helped by a longer barrel. If you get an untapered barrel and when you shoot it out you can cut an inch off the chamber and a half inch off the crown and get twice the life out of your barrel.

Check SavageShooters forum... they have a guy on there who sells actions.

Thanks for the advice Kludge I am going to look into that.

Tony I dont know where you came up with the assumption that I was having trouble finding a bbl.
