Hey all, I'm here from CA and I need some advice. I plan on building an AR in a couple of months, so I need some help in my research on price. I want to build my AR as affordably as possible, but I will use a complete upper and complete lower because of my inexperience.

I want my AR to have a 16" barrel with a flat top upper receiver. I found that I can get a Stag upper for $440. I also want to get a lower with a 6 position stock. I found a Stag lower for $255, making for a grand total of $695. Is this the best price I can expect for quality components? Also, I would appreciate it if you guys could point me to reliable vendors for parts online.

CA............?

Better brush up on your "Assault Weapons" restrictions first! Hate to see you go through a bunch of effort to learn how to build an AR, only to built a Felony case against yourself.

Good luck

good luck it CA. I thought the pistol grip alone would kill that Idea as a assault rifle. But, here is a question for all you folk in CA. What if you buy a reciever and register it as a pistol. As long as you forgo the "perminate stock", the keep the barrel under 14", you might have a cool toy that is CA legal. ;)

A site whose proprietors I know nothing about, so no endorsement here, but which may give you some guidance about what makes for a California legal AR: Fab 10.

I can build an AR in California as long as it has a non-detachable magazine. Basically, ten shots is it. I guess I could go the more practical route and get a SKS, but an AR is so much cooler.

Why build Why not just buy complete? Talk to Chris @ lanworldinc.com he specializes in CA compliant AR's. You can buy a complete lower from him with monsterman grip and fixed stock for $265 and buy an upper for $485 for a price of around $750 you can have a complete rifle. You can have a detachable magazine with a monsterman grip fixed stock and muzzle break. or pistol grip and folding stock with muzzle break and top loading 10 round fixed mag.

You can do some research here:

You can't have any "evil features" with a detachable magazine in CA. So, a lot of CA folks build on stripped lowers with a kit, see here:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782
Then they use a Bullet Button or similar device to lock the magazine. Or they use a monsterman type grip. Still you can only use a 10 rd. mag.
I'm geting ready to build one myself this summer.
Do some homework and enjoy!
