I 2nd the XD40 subcompact. Good choice. I use the short clip for CCW and the extended clip otherwise.
I also 2nd going to a range to see what feels the best to you. You will be glad you did.

A small and light 40 will NOT be fun to shoot. The .40 S&W is much more controllable in an all metal gun like a Sig or Beretta or CZ.

If you can, rent a couple of different makes including a Sig P229, then decide.
