I have a #4 mk2 sporter that I use mainly for shooting Roos it has a really short stock ( my sons .22 stock is nearly 2" longer) making the gun feel a little aquward I know I could buy a plastic one for around $100 but where is the satisfaction in that.

I have a nice blackwood log a mate was going to make a dressing table out of but it's been 3 years and he hasn't picked it up so I thaught I might as well use it before it rots.It looks like a fairly straight foward wood working project having the stock seperate from the for end .

What I wanted to know was what is the best way to align the grain? Paralell to the mounting bolt or the barrell or some where in between.

Is there anything else I need to take into concideration?

I would try to shape the stock with grain running straight through the centerline of the direction of force through the stock, which I believe would be parallel to the stock bolt.

My other hot tip would be to drill your stock bolt hole in an oversized blank before performing any rough shaping. This hole is stepped, and the length of the smaller diameter portion is critical and this must match the original. Get the hole in place then use a guide pin to align the buttstock while inletting. After the stock is inlet to the metal, then shape the stock.

Thanks for the reply that makes sence I had hoped to rip up the log today but got waylayed rescueing a horse.

I would orient the grain just like a laminated stock, that's to say the grain edges should be vertical.Should be much stronger that way.
