Savage all the way, extremely strong action and excellent accuracy, and competitively priced to boot. The edge is a great rifle also if you're on a budget.

The quarter bore is a great caliber and I love my old plain-Jane Rem 700. You'll want the longer barrel to really ring out the velocity. I handload with alot of slow powder and it needs the longer barrell.

The Tikka T3 Varmint comes with a 600mm (23-3/4") barrel. If you want a 25-06 and are going to handload you would be much better off with the Tikka T3 Varmint in .260remington (6.5mm08). With the 6.5mm -0.264 (over the 0.257) you get a much better choice of hunting and target bullets, bigger range of bullet weights and the bullets have about the best B/C-S/D on the market all in a short action rifle (vs the long action of the 25-06). For example with bullets weights around 120 grains the 25-06 is around 100 fps faster (at the muzzle) but the 6.5mm bullets have a much better B/C so they don't lose speed as quick as the .257 bullets so from about 200-250 yards and beyond the .260 bullets will be faster.

EDIT: If you are not going to handload you are better of with the 25-06 as there is not much in the way of factory 260 ammo.

I bought two new Remington 700s and both were duds. One would not chamber a round (CDL) the other started rusting two days after I took it out of the wraping despite being well oiled and properly stored (ADL). I had a Winchester 70 in the 90's that never had any issues except not grouping worth a darn (before I started handloading), I understand that the new FN made ones are much more accurate. I think the TC Venture is the best value of the bunch but I would really love to have a good looking hardwood stock if I could squeeze it in the budget. Any imput on the 100gr vs 120gr debate? Some guys swear by their 3300-3500 fps 100 grainers while others seem to love the hefty 115-120s at 3100-3200fps. I would be shooting small-med whitetail at beanfield ranges 200-400yards being the norm.

If the deer are small in AL go with a 100 gr bullet. I'd use the 120 for larger deer or whatever.

The two I have were both bought used, one is on an Arentinian Mauser done very well and the other is a 700 ADL with SS Shilen barrel. Both have Timmney triggers and 6X Leupold scopes and will shoot well under MOA. They both cost considerably less than factory and have had some nice work done on them. Both guns together cost less than what some are suggesting for one average off the rack rifle with no glass, I would never be afraid to take a chance on what appears to be a good used gun.
