Am looking for a .22 plinker.

Was thinking about the Walther P-22... Opinions please. Much appreciated.
If you advise against it, why and please do let me know an alternative.

Thank you.

I own one.. shoots very straight, I like the ambid. mag release and safety cuz I'm a lefty.. :) I just put a laser on it, the rail is handy too..

Buy a new one, the older ones have problems they've fixed. And if you're handy at all, you might want to download the P22 Bible document, it's google-able. There are a few things to do to make this gun last longer, and they really aren't that hard. Stock, there are a couple of 'grind points' in the slide action that take little chunks out of what should be smooth metal.. and the feed ramp could use polishing and 'alleviating' with Dremel tools.. but none of it is complicated.. I haven't done any of it, and mine has eaten several thousand rounds with no problems.

They have a pretty small grip.. the 'finger rest' magazine is better than the flat bottom one, and both are standard in the box. 2 mags.

I'm very happy with mine and if I didn't do any of those chores on it, I'd still expect it to last for years and work well... but the 'bible' list is going to make it even better if I ever get around to it.

Shoots straight.. did I mention that? :)

and if you get one, don't use plain lead/waxed bullets, as they really crud up the whole system. Get Remington GOlden Bullet copper plated ammo for practice, and when serious, CCI Stingers. It's known to fail to cycle when using underpowered ammo. sp high or hyper velocity only. And round nose bullets. I tried Vipers today, little 'wad cutter' flat nose bullets, and it did jam on me. They're not really autoloader rounds but I was curious. :)

Oh, and a fantastic alternative if you can get it is the Bersa Firestorm... very well made, shoots great... probably no aftermarket grips, and no rail for laser, but overall a great shooting all steel .22 auto 10 shotter.

Bought one for the wife to learn to shoot with. Pretty accurate right out of the box, and the price was right. If you want flexibility, go for the two barrel kit (5" and 3" barrels in one boxed set).

My wife likes hers quite a bit.

Try to buy one NOT made by Smith and Wesson. Not that they are bad manufacturers, but the P-22's that are entirely Walther are a bit better in function.

Run a search; it's your friend. The topic has been covered a dozen times in the past couple of months alone, I'd bet. Lots of folks love 'em, and lots of folks find 'em wanting.

I own two. Both have had consistent feeding problems with all brands of ammo. I sent both in for warranty work. One was fixed, one wasn't. I was never impressed with their accuracy, but liked the size.

I wouldn't recommend them due to my bad experience. However, I haven't found a 22 pistol I really like.

The only one I do like is my Glock 23 with an advantage arms conversion kit. Just my 2 cents.

so... you are aware that smith and wesson owns walther right? THEY ARE ONE IN THE SAME. I am not a big smith an wesson fan, but I am not about to down their manufacturing. they make great revolvers and polymers. the p-22's are great guns that are entirely too much fun...I know 50+ people personally who have purchased them, many for their GF or wife(took it for themselves shortly thereafter) and have never seen anyone with a single complaint.

P-22

I Also have one with 3 & 5 inch barrel set. It feed's everything I put through it pretty accurate also.:)

My mother-in-law uses a P22 for her CCW. It's a fun shooter but for .22, I prefer my Ruger "slabside" MKII. The Ruger is heavier but is a great shooter because of the additional weight IMO. You won't go wrong with the P22.

You may also want to consider a SIG Mosquito. I was also between the P22 and the SIG. Both guns can be a little fussy with ammo brands. Break in is important with the SIGs, but if you follow the suggestions in the manual, they are relilable and fun to shoot. You can also get a threaded barrel on the SIG if you ever want to go with a silencer. Fun plinker and a good simulator of a full size 9mm. It is about 3/4 the size of a full frame handgun and is great for women and those with less than large hands.

Ditto on the P22

My P22 was an early one that was finicky on everything but Minimags.

I wasn't a fan of the pot metal slide.

It was fun to shoot, accurate, and now that I sold it, I need to find a suitable replacement for my wife to call her own.

The P22 that I have has never given me any problems. It is my 2nd favorite 22 plinker, right after my MKII. It's has always been a favorite of my kids and their cousins and has thousands of rounds put through it with only a hand full of FTF.
