I picked up a 7.5" Super Redhawk in 454 Casull/45 colt today. Would like some suggestions for a warm 45 Colt load using Xtreme .452 Plated 255gr bullet heads.

I'm an experienced loader, but first 45Colt. I've got most pistol powders (from bullseye, 231, Unique, PP, AA 5/7/9, TB, etc). I was thinking something around 1,000 fps for a good warm target load (beyond standard 45 Colt). Thinking about around 11.5gr AA#5 based off of some data I've seen. This a good powder for this objective? Any other recommendations?

Plan to load full power 454 Casull loads with Hdy XTPs and Enforcer or W296. Lots of data there.

Thanks.

Do you have a reloading manual??

Or internet access to the Hodgdon's, Alliant, or Accurate websites??

BTW: 9.0 - 10 grains Unique in .45 Colt cases in a strong gun like yours will push a 255 plated bullet as fast as you need to push it.

Yeah, I've got Ramshot #5, Hdy 8 & 9, and several Speers and Lyman's. all seem to be missing this "mid-range" area. Most just seem to provide 14k PSI 45 Colt or 32k PSI MAX Colt loads.

Lyman was useless, Ramshot only gave limited data for +P. Hdy was was ok, but powders didn't seem right burn range for objective, using AA9. Seemed slow for my velocity goal. Hodgdon didnt help any.

Seemed like AA5 - unique/ PP would be better. I use a lot of 10gr Unique in 44 Mag, so that seems about right based on increased case size, etc

10 grains of Unique with a 255 grain bullet is a classic warm .45 Colt load (so of course I haven't actually tried it  ) I have used 12 grains of Herco, which is pretty close but a little stronger -- it's probably too fast for a plated bullet, but would be good with a hard cast 250 or 255.

You also might like about 7 grains of Red Dot or Promo. That's a little more stout than a top-end standard .45 Colt load and should give you right at 1000 fps from a 7.5 barrel, and be clean and accurate. (My *favorite* .45 Colt load for my Blackhawk is 7.5 grains of Promo with a 230 grain cast bullet.)

Yeah, that is the problem with .45 Colt loads. I load for a S&W 25-5, so I am limited to loads in the area you want to be (20k to 25k psi). Loads with 255 - 270gr SWC bullets that I use regularly are:

13.0gr of HS-6
18.0gr of 2400
21.0gr of 4227

All these loads with lead bullets will put you where you want to be velocity-wise.

I'd suggest anyone who handloads subscribe to www.loaddata.com There's an incredible amount of data there, all straight from the pages of Handloader and Rifle magazines as well as most of the major powder manufacturers.
