Hi All,

I live in Michigan. Moving to Washington in August.

Have a Michigan CCW.

Is my Michigan CCW still honored in Washington once I move to Washington? Am I required to get a Washington CCW once I move there?

Thanks!

According to packing.org MI and WA have reciprocity with each other. Not sure if you are required to have a WA permit if you are a WA resident.

WA residents are required to have a WA license. As soon as you become a WA resident your out-of-state license is no longer recognized.
WA definitely has a problem with the period in which you are waiting for your new license to arrive.

Unlicensed open carry is legal in WA. However, open/concealed carry in a vehicle is illegal in WA without a recognized license.

+1 To Henry's post...

I'm a legal immigrant, (citizen in 2010) and I had my CPL completed in 3 working days...

Off Topic a bit: now the Alien Firearms License, well that's another story, and I'm getting Congressional Assistance on that one...

WA is shall issue with no training requirement, so you should have no problem getting your CWP. A couple things to note though:

Where in WA are you moving? In the larger cities like Seattle and Spokane processing time may take a few weeks or even months (I've heard of up to 3 month waits).

If you are a WA resident you have to apply in the county that you reside, however, a non-resident can apply in ANY county. When I was going to school in Moscow, ID I got a non-resident CWP from the Colfax County Courthouse. I walked in, was fingerprinted, and walked out with my CWP in hand. Later, when I moved to Spokane, I went in and had the address changed for a small fee ($5 I think). A friend of mine applied for his CWP in Spokane and it took 3 weeks to come back.

If you are moving to a major city, I would suggest that you go to a small, pro-gun county and get a non-resident CWP first. Then, when you change your driver's license, go to the courthouse and pay the change of address fee. This might cost you a few extra bucks, but it will save you from waiting a few weeks for processing.

Moving from one state to another is a real PITA for CCW. You have LESS rights in the new state as a RESIDENT when you first become a resident than you do when you are a NONRESIDENT visitor! That makes no sense!

I went through the same thing. The BEST thing to do is research out of state CCW licenses (like Florida or Utah or New Hampshire) so you have something in the interum.

But many states won't honor an out of state CCW from a nonresident. It's just silliness and it's nonsense laws like that that just really tick me off. Laws that exist just for the sake of corraling us around like cattle and have no basis in logic drive me nuts.

So, research packing.org and figure out which nonresident permit WA will honor. Try to expedite one of those permits ASAP. When you get to WA and become a resident, your MI license and CCW will be invalid. There will be a wait for a WA permit so the idea is to have a nonres CCW in the interum.

Utah would do the trick. I doubt you can get one between now and August though.

So, research handgunlaw.us and figure out which nonresident permit WA will honor.
Fixed it for you. ;)

Good points on the wait times etcetera, I too received my CPL from the Whitman County Sheriff (Colfax Court House)... funny story about that, the guy that printed me, looked pretty familiar, turns out his twin brother is our Marshal...

Make ABSOLUTELY sure that when you return to Michigan to visit family, etc, after you move that your driver's license and CPL are both from Washington. Once you are no longer a Michigan resident your Michigan CPL is no good. If you try to carry in Michigan with a Washington DL and a Michigan CPL you can get in big trouble.

I'm not saying you'd do that, just wanted to throw it out there so you'd know for sure though.

Under state law RCW 9.41.070 there is no allowance for taking three months to issue a CPL.

(1) The chief of police of a municipality or the sheriff of a county shall within thirty days after the filing of an application of any person, issue a license to such person to carry a pistol concealed on his or her person within this state for five years from date of issue, for the purposes of protection or while engaged in business, sport, or while traveling. However, if the applicant does not have a valid permanent Washington driver's license or Washington state identification card or has not been a resident of the state for the previous consecutive ninety days, the issuing authority shall have up to sixty days after the filing of the application to issue a license.

For the Department of Licensing Concealed Pistol License Page see:

There may be no allowance but it takes that long unfortunately , they need to attach some penalties for failing to meet the deadlines but since they dont ............ anyway welcome to WA .

When I renewed mine, after a several year lapse, I had to wait for mine to be mailed. The Sheriff's office was out of the forms. I received it the next day, in the mail. :D

You have to apply for a CPL upon becoming a resident. If you apply for an out-of-state CPL at any Sheriff's office, you can later change the address, upon becoming a resident (90 days and DL or proof of residence via utility bills, etc.)

Willington, how the heck did you get a CPL? I was told in no uncertain terms no CPL for non citizens.

couldn't even get a Alien Firearm Permit.
