Greetings,

Anyone tried WC844 or WC846 in 308 under 147/150gr bullets? How was the accuracy?

I know the WC846 powder (that is BLC-2) is not within the burning speed range for the M1A, but my understanding is that powder was the one used with the military ammo. Could I use it?

Thank you

I'm using 846 in my mid-length RR.............24.0 under a 55 fmj, ww. srp, excellent accuracy and 100% function. For that matter I've loaded 40 to 45 grain Sierra's that shot far better than I thought they should using that same loading........and that's with a 1 in 8 bbl!

Remember tho, that when using surplus powders LOT # is everything. When you change lots, closely re check your loads.........I had to drop back several grains with one lot of the captioned powder as I was experiencing pressure indications.

Strongly suggest that one check with the forums on Cast Boolits.com for surplus data.

I use with great success 25 grains of wc844 under 55 grains hornady sp with my ar-15.

WC844 for 5.56 and WC846 for 7.62. Use both, works fine. Accuracy depends on the rifle, but WC846 with 150FMJ pulled GI bullets works good in my M1A.

Again, what about the burning rate?
Is it sacrilege to use it into my m1a?

I have found it works fine "but WC846 with 150FMJ pulled GI bullets works good in my M1A." as I said above. WC846/BLC-2 is fine. Look at Lyman #49 manual, 45 gr start, 49 gr max for 308. For M1A use, I started at 44.5 gr, worked fine; now I will try 45 gr to see how that does. I don't know where you got the idea WC846/BLC-2 is not within the powder burning range for the M1A, it IS the military 7.62 powder.

kestak,
Like said above, WC844 (H335) is better in the 5.56 NATO and WC846 (BL-C(2)/W748) is better in the 7.62 NATO but you can use either powder in either round. (although WC846 works better in the 5.56mm than WC844 in the 7.62mm)

ArchangelCD is right. I use both powders, but WC844 was designed and developed for 5.56, and WC846 was designed and developed for 7.62. Both can be interchanged with the other but the results are not quite as good either way. Good accuracy with each powder once you find the sweet spot for each lot.

And yes, lot number determines everything. You absolutely have to work up a load for each different lot number of powder and for each weapon you intend to use it in. My M14 and FAL each like a slightly different load of WC846, and my AR15 and Mini 14 each like different loads of WC844. Different barrel lengths and different twists. AR15 and M16 both like the same load, as does the AR-180.

I've been shooting H-335 (WC844) for over 30 years in the 5.56 (.223 Rem), .308 Win. out of my M1-A's with 147, 150 and 168 bullets and my M-1 Garands with 150 Gr. bullets (46.0 Gr.).

It works fine out of all three. It is a bit flashy out of the .308 and Garand, but accurate.

Actually, H335 is my fav powder for 5.56 & 7.62 but I could not turn down the deals on WC844 & WC846, so I am using the mil powder and saving my H335 for later.
