H.R. 308 is an uglier re-hash of the old 1994 ban on high capacity magazines.

It is outlined here: http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=6139

Please call your local reps and tell them (nicely) they must not support this idiotic bill. It will do nothing to stop crime, and only limit our 2nd Amendment freedom (as well as their chances of getting re-elected).

House page: http://www.house.gov/

Please find their contact info and at least email them what you think.

New York: Imposing on the nation what the impose on themselves.
I am saddened about what happened to Rep. McCarthy, but I was hit with a football a couple times when I was a kid, and you dont see me banning footballs because of their ballistic flight capability.

Is it out of committee?
Because this is primed to become the new Blair Holt silliness with a new thread every day about some dead legislation, and I just can't wind up the panic machine any more.

It actually happened to Gifford, McCarthy is the author of H.R. 308. But, I get your point.

As of now the status is referred to the house committee.

Check the status here: http://thomas.loc.gov/home/bills_res.html

Don't let this one slip through guys.

It's called the GOP. They won't let it through committee, let alone to the floor for a vote. It has 57 co-sponsors, and all Democrats. It won't make it until it has bipartisan support.

And that won't happen.

The part that bothers me is that leos are exempt. Too many of them think they are above the law already. We can always follow Mexico into chaos and lawlessness. We the people are the law.

HR1022, now HR308 ... do these anti gun nuts pick these bill numbers on purpose just to get under our skin?

Just to do what I can do, I contacted my congressman, who is a Republican member of the Judiciary Committee (which HR 308 - The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, must get through first) to oppose this legislation and not to vote to allow it to leave the committee.

Given the republican make up of that committee its unlikely to matter much but I felt I should at least let him know how I felt.

If Boehner says he no, its dead unless the backers of H.R. 308 get 218 signatures on a discharge petition. With at least 218 signatures on a discharge petition, Boehner would have to bring it to the floor for debate and a vote: That is not going to happen.

No, McCarthy's husband was murdered and her son injured by an assailant with a 15rd magazine. Thats why she's hellbent on banning them.

Thanks for the correction. It still doesn't make sense to me, as he may have well been killed by a man with a 10 round magazine, but that's a different discussion.

It looks like this thing is DOA. Even so, it's still a great idea to let your rep. know how you feel even if he most likely feels the same way you do. This will strengthen his or her resolve.

The whole bit in this bill about not even being able to transfer high cap magazines to another owner of the gun really bugs me as well.

It is odd that the numbers for a lot of anti-gun laws seem gun related. Maybe it's some kind of planned subliminal thing. ;)

This wouldn't have had a chance BEFORE the Nov election. A strong number of dems had already notified the speaker and the AG that they would not support any new gun legislation, making it futile to talk about it at all. One of the strategies they employed was to open up their ranks and support to a broader range of Democrats, to augment their odds of getting moderate voters. They welcomed pro-gun and other less-liberal candidates. This is one of the reasons they took both houses in 2008. The downside (to them,) is that they can't even think about new gun laws anymore.

No it's not out of any committee, and the Speaker says it never will be.

And bigfatdave is right, we are not going to do thread of the day on some bill that has almost no chance of making it. Unless this bill or another gets out of a committee there's nothing to talk about here.
