Currently I own a Colt 6920 (complete), and a SBR that is a Stag lower with a Colt 11.5" A1 upper. There's also a KAC RAS-II laying around here that I could sell. Hmm. The ARMS Aimpoint mount would have to go, too.

Would I be nuts to sell the 6920, KAC RAS-II, and Colt upper, then use the funds to buy a LMT MRP w/ 10.5" and 16" barrels?

What I have works fine, so it's not a matter of need. I like the MRP concept and think it might simplify things for me a little.

No

I certainly wouldn't do it.

But if you decide to go through with it, I need another RAS II (I guess :D )

I really really really like the MRP concept. But I can't bring myself to shell out for one right now. Considering they are going to release 6.8 SPC barrels for it, buying one is certainly something to consider.

If you're willing to part with the Colt, I say go for it.

Ok I don't know what half those acronyms meant, some one please 'splain them for simple me

Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT) has designed the Monolithic Rail Platform (MRP), it's an AR15 upper and rail system machined from one piece of aluminum, with a quick change barrel system, requires a torque wrench and extra barrels. With one upper you can have an 16" barrel and a minute later install a 10.5" barrel and have a short barrel rifle (SBR).

Regular LMT MRP upper retails for around $1290 and extra chrome lined or stainless barrels are $350 and $470 respectively. It'd run you about $1640 minimum for the upper and an extra barrel plus $65 if you don't have a torque wrench. Long term, you'd probably want a specific bolt for each barrel, so there's another $60. Worst case around $1765.

You'll also have to make small adjustments, between barrels, if you have one sight system or have return-to-zero mounts on seperate sight systems.

A new CMMG complete upper with Larue or Daniel Defense rails will run in the neighborhood of $775 and $800, respectively. $1550 to $1600 to have two seperate uppers. (you'll have almost the same cool points as an MRP, okay no where close to as many cool points, but cool none the less. And, you'll be able to shoot one upper and make an easy switch)

There's not that much difference in price, considering what you get with the MRP. A two barrel system not much of a price advantage, but if you add more barrels (like an 18" SPR and a 6.8, right?) in the future, the MRP cost less than having several equally equipped upper receivers.

If I could buy an MRP and not lose the family jewels, I would. I can rationalize it out to be cost effective, just like fishing.

I'm starting to think the best option is to save up $$$ and buy the LMT MRP outright. Then if I like it, I can sell my other stuff. Or keep it in the closet as backups. :D

I'd like to see how the VLTOR VIS looks when it hits production. Also, rumor has it that Larue is working on a MRP as well.

Just remember the MRP with at least three barrels will save you money, by buying one you will SAVE money. SWMBO will understand saving money. Buy one now save money in the future, treat it like a money saving INVESTMENT. Who could object to that?

If SWMBO is being unreasonable and doesn't want you to save money, you can send it to me and I'll hide it in my closet.

Emphasis on key words to use in convincing SWMBO and the self-rationalization process.

I wouldn't. The main reason I wouldn't is because of the MRP's need for proprietary barrels which gets very expensive. For the cost an an MRP with 2 barrels, you can easily build 2 separate AR uppers, with rails, for the same cost. The continuous rail of the MRP seems like it would be a nice thing to have but when you honestly think about it, how much use would it really be? Also consider that there are some FF rail out there that give you pretty close to the same thing (Troy\Sampson) with a conventional upper.

There are also rumors of some "MRP type" uppers coming out that will work with any AR15 barrel. Vltor just came out with theirs but it does not feature the QD barrel system. L-W showed one in concept form that may hopefully be out this year that looks really sweet. I will accept standard barrels (in a QD format) and will also accept their piston op system and was said to be expected to cost much less then the LMT version. That's the one I would wait for if I had any desire for one but honestly, I just don't see much need for something like that.

I don't really see the point myself.
I would rather have completely seperate whole guns.

For example:
I have an SBR with a 7 1/2" barrel with an entry stock. I have an SBR with a 11 1/2" barrel and a Sully stock.
I have an SBR in 9mm with a 11 1/2" upper and a Sully stock. I also have an LRM M169 Suppressed 9mm upper.
I am going to by a Colt RR if the guy will call me on the phone so I know where to send the money. :fire: If/When I get that, I am putting a VLTOR stock on it.
I can switch any one of those uppers to any one of those lowers. I can not only choose the barrel length, I can also choose the stock. Since they are all flat top receivers, I can also choose the optic: I have the Aimpoint ML2 and 3. A TA31F Acog. And a 10X mil dot scope all in LaRue mounts. I can put any optic on any upper. All uppers have BUIS.
Of course I can also run any of the 5.56 lowers with 16" uppers or my 24" scoped upper.
All the uppers except the 7.5" are equipped with the AAC flash suppressor so I can use my AAC M4-2000 Suppressor on any of them.
I can also use the various vertical foregrips including the 900 series Surefire weapons light with a LaRue mount or the bipod on a LaRue mount on any of the uppers because they all have a rail system.

The point to all that is to illustate that the AR15 system is very modular to begin with. You can very easily change configurations as is: I don't think that being able to change barrels on one gun would add anything to the mix.

That MGI thing is cool, but it isnt' select fire.

Yes, that would be nuts. The 6920 will keep it's value very well. I would think long and hard before giving it up.

If you absolutely need the barrel changing abilities than yes, otherwise I'd wait. There are several companies working on monolithic upper platforms that do not require proprietary barrels. Vltor has their VIS upper which were on display at Shot Show and I believe rumor mills have it that Larue Tactical is also working on something. It's a great time to be an AR lover.
