A few firearms were apparently stolen. Not a news worthy event here in the US. Folks here are more interested in Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and that bunch.

They don't suspect outside forces, so it's possible someone has sticky fingers on base. I'm not sure where you saw it could possibly be ISIS that stole them. Also, this isn't really a huge amount of weapons, several pistols, a rifle, and a shotgun. Not to discount the fact that they went missing (they should figure out how that happened if they can)...but we're not talking about pallets worth of mortars and automatic rifles.

Also why is it disturbing that the media doesn't cover it? What's disturbing about that? This happened in Germany, not the United States. I bet the German media are mentioning it.

a few hundred bucks worth of old guns were stolen. not real newsworthy. and certainly not anything that gives ISIS some major new capability.

Often times, military equipment is only "missing" on paper because someone didn't fill out the correct forms.

This thread reminds me that I've been meaning to watch my copy of Lord of War again... :D

I'm more upset about all the weaponry we've essentially given them.

That - and the fact we created them in the first place.

Couple thousand Humvees and a handful of M1 tanks have been in ISIS hands for well over a year.

years ago a sidewinder missile was stolen and taken right out the front gate. I don't remember which air base it was but it did happen

If it was ISIS I'd be more worried about how they broke into the base rather than the fact that they took a few guns they could probably buy in any town in Syria or Iraq. Of course I doubt ISIS has anything to do with it.

Is this the incident you are thinking of?

An inert Hellfire missile was redirected in transit to Cuba as well.

My guess is a donation to the Clinton foundation ensured after the Hellfire missile landed in Cuba.

We can eliminate the Marines as the thieves since there were items left behind.

What thevery in my Army? The army gave me those 20 round mags that happened to be in my dufflebag after I got home. My Mom did it.

Some of you boys might be shocked at how unsecure such things are on post.

Wouldn't be hard at all to walk off with a whole lot more deadly things than a couple beaters...

Didn't Mexico 'lose' like three traincars of our donated M16s a year or so back?

You must have in your possession a DOD ID card to get on base. There is no way ISIS can get onto a military reservation. That being said its an inside job. Usually the kind of weapons like this that are stolen are privately owned weapons. These weapons likely belong to owners who have since left and went back to the United States.
Some years back soldiers could no longer bring privately owned weapons into Germany due to a change in their laws and the Status of Forces Agreement, (SOFA).

On one last note each and every arms room is equipped with a physical security system and an alarm system that notifies the military police every time there is a break in. This is why I am fairly certain that this is an inside job.

Yep, sounds like some privately owned weapons were ripped off.

They could have bought (most likely full auto) guns with almost zero risk in Poland and the Czech Republic. Breaking into an army base would not be worth the risk unless they were truly after high-tech equipment and that did not seem to be the case.

A personal friend of mine (mostly reformed now) did hard time in the fed pen for stealing arms from his base in Germany in the 1980's to support his drug habit.

It does happen.

I sure hope there's not so much dope in uniform as there was in the '70's and '80's. I was appalled at what was all around me back then.

My nephew mans the arms room for the security forces at a large army base (boring duty that he hates) and this spring an ACOG went missing.

After thorough searches and the possibility of an entire unit being disciplined, somebody tossed said missing ACOG wrapped up in a sock over the fence.

And it didn't make national news Hmmmm....

Note that the Stars and Stripes article says that there were no signs of an outside breach.

As command duty officer at a major naval station years ago, one of the evening rituals was to check on the welfare of every member of our command that was quartered in the brig. And the range of charges these guys were detained for varied from missing ship's movement to theft, rape and even murder. They aint all heroes and they aint all saints. So as the morals of the society go, there go also the morals of the military.

Read the bios of the Easy Company men mentioned in Band of Brothers and you'll find that several of them joined the Airborne after being rejected by the USMC because they were branded "morally unfit for duty" by the corp. Some for reasons as simple as a juvenile theft conviction. When was the last time you heard of anybody being declared "morally unfit for duty" these days? Even the Dallas cop murderer, who while deployed with his army reserve unit committed sexual harassment, theft of female underwear and a hand grenade was given an honorable discharge.
