No complaints with mine; S2 Deluxe .30-06

What caliber/style you looking at?

Vanguard ....Howa, Smith & Wesson. Mossberg. All made by Howa. I have not seen one yet that isn't a shooter. Action is smooth. Buy it.

Only thing I don't like about a Weatherby is the stock does not fit me right (I am short) If they made a more compact/slimmer stock I would be all over one of them.

Some people complain about rough mold seams on the stock, and that it is heavy. If I had any complaint it would be the stock, but its not bad. Mine has a decent trigger and shoots well. My range at my home is 160 yards. It stays between 1" and 1.25" at that range with handloads. The action is as smooth as the Mark V to me.

I'd say this is a great starter rifle, as long as the 7 lb weight wouldn't be a problem. Mine is a 25-06.

The Weatherby will be in .300 Weatherby Magnum, so weight should not be an issue. My son might be able to go on an Elk hunt or Brown bear hunt in the future so thats the reason for the caliber.
A 22-250 works fine on the whitetails on my ranch. A smith at the rifle range where I shoot is selling ALL of his old model Weatherbys because he thinks the trigger on the new model (S2) is the best thing since sliced bread.
I am not a fan of composite stocks but the price is right on these rifles at Cabelas..

P.R.

My dad had a Mark V that I remember fondly when I was growing up, and I had a S1 Synthetic, smooth as silk.. .30-06
The S2 I've handled seemed to be even more refined.

When it comes to hunting rifles, I prefer wood. The Weatherby Vanguard Sporter Deluxe has some of the nicest wood on a rifle out there, the only nicer stocks I've seen on a production rifle have been Weatherby Mark V sporter.

Problem is, with the deluxe.. save a few hundred more, and you can get the Mark V... heh.

Being that I'm just getting into hunting, I have a older Remington 700 BDL Custom Deluxe, that is almost as nice as the Vanguard Sporter Deluxe.. can't drop that kind cash on either of the two Weathrby's until I bring home some serious meat.

I don't think you will find any REAL negative information on the Weatherby Vanguard, of any series. Especially with the new trigger.

They also stand behind their guns pretty well, and are all nice folks to talk too.

I liked the ones I handled other than the "Made in Japan" mark stamped into the side of it.

I couldn't imagine myself sitting in the woods all day with that glaring back at me.
I like my Ruger all weather though. Shoots great ta boot.

How about the ones that say "Made in Germany" and "Made in U.S.A." etc?

They make a solid rifle, and have been around for a while. Howa , who makes the barreled action for the Vanguard, has been around even longer.

Japan is on par with manufacturing technology, as we are. Sometimes, they can beat us at our own game.

I'm with you about that "Made in Japan" thing on a Weatherby staring at you on the side of the reciever.

That is why I opted not to pick up an S2. I really like the rifle, and already own both a Howa 1500 Lighting in 6.5x55 and a Weatherby Vanguard Varmint Special in .223 Rem. I just decided that my next rifle should be made in America by American workers. Guess I got my new Model 70 just in time, as now I hear that in 2013 they will manufacture the components here, but that the rifle will be assembled in Portugal and shipped back to the US for sale. I suppose my next one will have to be a Ruger, Savage or Remington, since they are all assembled here. (at least for the moment).
Still the new S2 Vanguard is a very nice rifle and I really like the new trigger. And there is no question that the Japanese can manufacture a quality product, I just think we should buy American when we can.

the two stage trigger is great at the bench but I prefer single stage for high adrenaline hunting situations.
