I thought that it was odd that you could buy the loaded ammo cheaper than brass. A couple of my distributors had ammo for $30 wholesale, brass was $35-$70. I bought 3 boxes just for the brass. My older Vanguard (probably '05-09 production) had a different trigger than a Howa. Trigger REALLY sucked.
I installed a Timney. It's not all that much better. I'm disappointed with it. It will only go down to about 4lbs. But, it's better than the Weatherby that would only go to about 7lbs, rough and creepy.
Rifle is very accurate. Especially with Norma 100gr Spt. It's the only factory ammo I've shot as I bought it for the brass, as it was cheaper than Weatherby boxed brass!! (Also made by Norma).
My bigger disappointment with the rifle is that it only has a 24"bbl.
I bought it cheap at a pawn shop as no one wanted to pay $$ for the ammo. Having reloaded for a .257Robt for 30yrs, I had plenty of bullets. Also, large stock of WC860, for a .300RUM. So, I only needed brass...
hmmm experimenting with picture post....View attachment 778543
Norma sends the Weatherby boxed/labeled ammo to Weatherby for their distribution. Mark-up and shipping costs explains the difference. Additionally, the Weatherby branded ammo has a Hornady manufactured bullet, with export fees and shipping increasing cost.
re: Timney trigger, data sheet specs that came with it specifically stated that minimum pull would be in 3.5-4lb to maintain safety function and margin. Timney only made one at the time for the Vanguard. It's NOT the 1.5-4lb model. (10yrs ago, now)
It's an older model. Doesn't look quite like one one shown on MidwayUSA web site.

I didn’t know the older Timney for Howa/Vanguard couldn’t be adjusted below 3.5 lbs. So I guess you don’t have a defective trigger.
Pretty sure he stated it had a 2 stage trigger, that makes it a Vanguard2. Should have a good to great trigger.

You are wrong.
This is my 4th Vanguard and my second one in 257 Mag. The first two shot very well and had good triggers. In fact the 223 was one of the most accurate rifles that I have owned. The third was ok, but nothing special. This one's trigger is nothing like the ones in the other three and it is a two-stage. I usually adjust the trigger as soon as I get one.
You are confused. I was referencing a post made by GooseGestapo. It is stated in my post. You are referencing Captcurt. Read post #27 and #30.
GooseGestapo made a post which I responded to. He then clarified his post based on my response which is that he has an older model Vanguard. You then jump in and say his Vanguard has to be a S2 Vanguard. You are wrong.
The old Vanguard trigger had a 2 position safety. The new S2 has a 3 position safety and is 2 stage. HACT was introduced sometime in 2013. If your Vanguard is older than that it doesn't have a HACT trigger. I don't think the trigger groups swap out.
How hard can it be to figure out which one you have?
The OP obviously has an old Vanguard trigger. Just about everyone replaced them or had a smith touch them up. The new S2 trigger is one of the best out-of-the -box triggers available.
