I've got a Webley Mark IV and have recently been having a harder time finding .38 S & W ammunition. I've read a lot about the moon clips available for the Mark VI, and that led me to wonder if it would be possible to machine a moon clip for the Mark IV that would allow it to shoot 9mm shells. Any thoughts?

The gun is not nearly strong enough for the 9mm round.

The .38 S&W is a 13,000 PSI round.
The 9mm could be three times that pressure in certain loadings.

It would be a very dangerous conversion.

Yes, but if done like the Mk VI (to convert to .45 ACP), the gun would then not be usable with .38 S&W because there would be too much headspace. Further, shooting 9mm in that revolver would be a bad idea; the pressure is a lot higher and the gun would be ruined in a fairly short time. (That has already happened to Mk VI revolvers firing the higher .45 ACP, a considerably higher pressure load than the old .455 Webley.)

If you still want to go the 9mm route, there is a way to set the cylinder up for clips and still have the capability to use the revolver round, but it is fairly expensive and I don't know if anyone will do it for a Mk IV. You might contact the folks at www.cylinder-slide.com and see what they say.

The easiest and cheapest solution might be to buy an inexpensive reloader (like a Lee Loader) and reload for the .38 S&W. If you already reload, it would only be a matter of a new die set.

I bought a $25 Webley revolver in 1979 and the cost of one box of ammo ($12 in those days) inspired me to begin pistol reloading.

The Webley is long gone but I'm still reloading.

If you should decide that reloading is the way to go, the .38 S&W is an easy round to reload.

When ever such ideas strike, check the cartridge/chamber dimensions first. The .38 S&W/.38-200 cartridge has a straight case, and a diameter in front of the rim of .386".

The 9mm has a tapered case that is .392" at the head and .380" at the front. You might get a round chambered in your conversion, but the chamber would be oversized at the front.

If you use this forum's search feature you will find all kinds of threads on the .38 S&W cartridge, including on-line sources and reloading information.

Go here and look at the Magtech:

It's $18/box. I'm presently trying to reload the stuff, though, if only I could get that friggin' thing to work. I always need just one more little part; it's my first try at reloading....

PS: I bought my reloading stuff because I have a .38 MKIII (P. Webley & Son) that I love to shoot. Webleys are well made guns. I had a gunsmith do some work on it and he said that the steel was very good. It surprised him. I bet it could handle a 9MM. Won't try it but it probably could.
