Weird encounter while walking the dog today

Hi Guys
At one of Andy Standford's classes we were taught in dicey situations but with no immediate threat to have your hand on the but of the gun, but to keep it in the holster. That way you are not mistaken for a bad guy, yet you can have the gun up about as fast as you can from having at your side. Try it.

Best Regards,
Sam

Personally, at seeing the car approaching slowly like that with the lights out, I would have drawn my 1911 and held it against my leg out of sight. Just to be prepared, ya know. That situation could have gotten very ugly very quickly.
Careful with that. Brandishing laws can be a PITA. Not to mention cops are fond of approaching incident scenes slowly with their lights off from time to time. Being questioned as to why you're out at night with a loaded gun in your hand might put a damper on the rest of your night. They get a call about a suspicious person in the area and drive through all sneaky like. You see them with their lights off, don't see it's a cop, and draw your 1911. Now you're standing there with the spotlight in your face and a gun in hand. Have fun with that one.

Drawing your weapon when not faced with a certain life-threatening situation can put you in legal hot water fast.

Great advice.

and no guessing about this.

Most armed robberies happen extremely fast. Robbers actually put a lot of effort into the element of surprise. If these guys were planning to rob you they'd have moved much faster than that and they'd been even less likely to do it in a place that hindered their quick escape. Just ride up to you with their headlights on, for the initial blinding effect, as if they're asking directions and stick a gun in your face.

Like rbernie and others wrote, these guys were looking for a pharmacuticals transaction and this is one of their usual locations. Your presence likely kept the other player(s) away. Their lights off is simply a signal to whoever is playing. Don't underestimate the intelligence of people involved in criminal activity. They're just morally stupid, that's all.

Rondog and waldonbuddy also made good points. Situational awareness is great but you also should know what to look for and how to react to it. Carry your gun in a way that you can respond to trouble quickly without getting mistaken for a "man with a gun" by the neighbors and the police.
