Well I know I'm new to the board and most of you don't know me but ....

I'm happy to say I've taken the plunge and decided to go the Law Enforcement route, careerwise. It's gonna be a big blow to the budget if I'm accepted but it will ... in the long run ... be my boyhood and my adult dream come true. I've applied for the Harris county reserves which doesn't pay at all but if I work the program for just two years, I'll be considered for real full time police employment.

OK maybe I'm making much ado about a small thing but I've finally reconciled the idea with my wife and my dogs don't seem to know the difference.

I just can't wait for the call and my dive into L.E.

Best of luck to you in your career. I got into law enforcement in 1985, and still doing the job.

Just to keep this on a gun threat, will they provide you with a dept issue, or do you have to buy your own? I started out with a 6" Colt Python, and after a year or so, bought a Colt Ser 70. Now I have a dept issued Glock. Took a lot to make myself shoot better with it, but really like bringing out my trusty 1911 every now and then.

Best of luck! I had originally intended on entering LE. Graduated with a degree in Law Enforcement, worked an internship with a local dept. and attended the states basic academy. Applied to 2 depts. made it to orals in one but just missed the cut-off. Oh well. With a new wife and family I am now happily missing that carrer. I'd rather spend my time with them when i can and my current job (8-4:30) gives me a great schedule for that.
Because of what I learned & exerienced, I have a great deal of respect for those that wear the badge so long as they wear it for the right reasons.
Once agin, good luck and stay safe. Most importantly, listen and learn - that'll help keep you safe!

age cut off.

Anybody know the age cut off to be a reserve. I already went through a post reserve course back in 92. I have been Army most my adult life. But not an mp. I am 39. Thanks HR

It depends on the department. I know of a fellow with the local SO who's in his (60s? 70s?), and is still an active reserve on motorcylce duty. Get in touch with your local reserve coordinator. You'll need to take the new reserve courses. Things have changed radically for reserves since 92. But I think it's for the better. I went through the old course, and I've taken the new. Big improvements.

I asked the Campbell reserve officer guy. He said that I would need a basic post behind me. But, He said with my background he did not see a problem. Not that I am some stud guy. I just have not been arrested or UCMJ hammered. I found two POST programs in the area. Might happen. Just might.
 
Congratulations on going for your dream! I sort've did the same thing a few years back, becoming an LEO when I was 48. Had to quit after about 3 years (developed bad night vision) but at least I got to do it for a while.
