I bought my first handgun last weekend. I love the look of Sigs and I really love the PCR. Well I handled the Sigs both 226 and 228 and though I like the looks of the pistol, the grip was much too thick for my little mitts. I was really disappointed. Moved to the CZ. No pcr in the shop but he let me look at the full size 75. Nice and comfy and I know you guys say its a real shooter but I felt like I was compromising and not buying the gun I want. The dealer mentioned to me more than once if I looked at a Beretta. My reply was if I couldn't get my hands around the grip of the Sig, how was I gonna hold the Beretta. Well, I grabbed the 92fs and it felt great! Nice and clean and the take down of this piece was cake.

So I walked out with a 92fs stainless in 9mm. I paid $650 for it so I don't think I got a deal. The shop owner did give me 125 rounds of ammo though. A box of Speer gold dots and two boxes (of American Eagle I think) for target shooting. I still have not been shooting yet but I plan to do so soon. There were two guys in the shop with me and both pulled the same weapon out to unload and leave on the counter. They loved it and were confident I would too. They left me their business cards and told me to call them and we would meet to go shooting. A vet and mortgage consultant. I am very excited about all of this and everyone here has been a help wether they know it or not.

I plan to check in to give you my first range report.

Excellent choice of gun and caliber......Beretta's are reliable and easy to take down....9mm is cheap,so you'll shoot alot and 9mm will work for targets as well as self defense...........welcome to THR and handgunning.Only one problem....once you get one,you want more....

Hi SB1, Congrats on your new gun. I also have looked at the Beretta. They seem to fit the hand very well. I know what you mean about settling for something you did not want but a CZ 75 is a nice gun and you would have liked it also.
Don't let the 45 guys tell you that the 9mm is worthless. The more different guns I have the more I believe that it is practice and shot placement that is the key and I find that I shoot 9mm the best of all the centerfire rounds. Start to look for cheaper ammo and practice. I can find 9mm for almost half of 45 ammo.
Tony is right about buying more. I thought I was on track for 1 new gun a year since I got my permit but I counted and I have twice that. Oops!
How many hoops did you have to jump through to get a permit in NYC?

So sorry the SIG's did not fit your mitt's!:( You missed out
on a world class 9m/m firearm. But not all is bad, Beretta's
are an excellent choice as well.:) After all, Pietro Beretta
& Company have been making firearms for over 475
year's.:uhoh: The stainless 92FS will serve you well for
many more moons; if properly taken care of.
Congratulation's, and welcome to the shooting sport's!

Best Wishes,

Hoops! It was a circus act....

It was a ginat expensive PITA but I am finally done. Too bad I have to go through more bs to get another one.

Dude, brightside is that you have a new 92fs! ;) Forget about the bs & concentrate on the up side ::

Beretta's on the whole are fine handguns, but some of the newer model 92's are having issues pop up (rough internals). Detail strip it, clean it (can of brake cleaner does a fine job), inspect mating surfaces, lightly lube, and let it rip. Most likely there will be no problems, but I have seen a few lately.

Congrats on your new purchase, but you still compromised.

BTW you could have got the same quality for half that price in the CZ-75.

Good gun for a first pistol. Shoot it to death, you'll like it. Like Lay's potato chips, "you can't have just one." So here is the question what are you going to get next? ;)

I already have three picked out

I absolutely love the PCR. I will never be able to CCW but that is on the wish list. I would like to get a nice revo too. .357/.38 Smith of some kind. I know Taurus makes some nice revo's too. and a good .22. The place where I bought the beretta has a buckmark with a red eye sight for $250. Seems like fun to shoot that all day.

nice!

Congrats on your new purchase.

Watch out though...

I bought my first gun a year and a half ago.

Now I own eight, and have about ten more I am seriously planning on buying.

:uhoh:

Revolver!

SB1,
If self defense isn't high on your list (heck, even if it is), the revolver will be the most fun gun to shoot.

My SIG P229 and P220 sit at home most of the time. Nothing beats a Smith.

If you only want one revolver, check out a Smith model 66.

Cheers,
Robert

I know what you mean about the Beretta grip being confortable even though it is big. I can't shoot a lot of guns because the grip is too big but I love my Beretta 92fs even though it has a grip that is probably just as big as some of the guns that I find too large.

SIGs are nice but the Beretta is no slouch and is second to none in terms of smoothness and ease of shooting. You should also check out the Kahr pistols, they feel great to people that have average size hands.

Congrats, especially if your location:NYC is correct! I've heard that it is indeed a formidable challenge to aquire any gun, let alone a handgun in the city LEGALLY ;) If your ever upstate drop me a note, I'll fire up the dillon and load up a coulple k rounds of 9 so you can give that baby a workout :)

Thanks 243!

We do get upstate to a friends house in the winter. I'll drop a line and let you know.

Hi SB1 I also had a problem with the grip size of my Sig 228 and had Teddy Jacobson "Actions by T" put in shorter trigger it helped.I just got a Sig 220 .45 cal that fits my small hand better the the Sig 228! Now why is the trigger shorter on a .45 then the 9mm,anyone know? Anyway try other Sigs .

Yup, Beretta is literally the world's oldest company.

They have records of sales for cannons going back 475 years :).

Don't let the 45 guys tell you that the 9mm is worthless

I like and shoot both. See my signature. BTW, my 9mm is my primary defense weapon at the moment.

SB1: Welcome to the forum and enjoy your Beretta! :)

Truth be told, the 9mm and 45acp have both been doing the job for nearly 100 years. I've never been able to fire the Beretta as well as I would have liked to. But, some people do very well with it.

for Gungeek

The problem with the grip I was having is being able to reach the controls. I can release the mag ob the beretta with my thumb but couldn't come close on the SIG. I was having trouble decocking the Sig where I was able to decock the beretta with my thumb. Also the trigger seemed just a tad out of reach with my finger where I was able to reach comfortably with the Beretta. Don't get me wrong. I really wished I could handle the 228 better. Even last night, I was going over the controls with the Beretta and it just feels right in my hand. In the store I would handle the beretta, put it down, pick up the 228, put it down, pick up the 226 etc. I am sure I made the right decision.
