Had a hankering for a new gun. Been wanting something I could hand down to one of my sons when I leave this world (hopefully years from now, Im still young!). I suppose you could do that to any of them, and I will, but I mean something I condsider pretty.

Oldest three kids are in New Mexico with their grandparents, wife and youngest are with the rest of my family at the beach, so having to stay behind for a week to myself, and feeling sorry for myself (lol), I went to the LGS.

Sorted through the usual over priced guns, and found a used 700 BDL in 30-06. I like classic guns in classic calibers. The owner of the LGS was out of town so I didnt get a chance to speak with him to haggle him like I usually do. Original price was $600 with a "On Sale! $550" sticker on it. Just from what little I got to look around on the net on my phone, it seemed as if this was a descent deal. I pulled the bolt, checked bore, looked to see how dirty it was to see if it appear to be shot much. I'm not expert, but it looked well kept, or shot little, or both.

A worker told me they could go $500 on it, $535 tax and all. On an impulse....probably too quick...I took her. Probably should have waited.

Dont have pics, but the gun was spotless minus a minor scratch on the floorplate.

Hope I didn't get hurt too bad, I feel pretty good considering the condition and price of the same thing new. Sales on the www. vary widely, so I'm not real sure.

You probably did fine considering you bought through a dealer; they have to make their cut. The 700 BDL in .30-06 truly is a classic. Mine shoots Remington 165 grain Core-Lokts extremely well. If you like the gun, don't sweat the price you paid.

That is on the low side of retail used pricing and if it is in good condition you got a nice deal and a rifle you can be proud of. I still havent owned a 700, most wont argue it is the best PF bolt gun going.

That's a reasonably good deal if it is excellent shape. Post pics, and congrats!

P.s. the older I get, the less I worry about whether I get a good deal or a great deal, as long as I get something nice that I like. I've lost too many good opportunities by trifling over looking for the perfect deal.

I figured if I waited until I could get back at a time when the owner that I know is there, it would be gone.

I'll post up some pics later on once I get it set up the way I want it. I'm going to shoot it....more than likely tear it down, give it a trigger job....then possibly bed and float it. Gotta get some glass too.

Cool, let us know how she shoots, the bdl is a nice rifle.

And as a general rule, there isn't any getting around paying good money for a good gun. You did good.

If I were in the market for a used deer rifle, a 700 BDL in 30-06 would be my first choice.

Of course, none of this happened without photos! ;)
